Job Description

The Board of Trustees for the Salida Regional Library (Southern Chaffee County Regional Library District) seeks a library director to serve with a passionate commitment to the library’s role in its community and with creative leadership to guide the community into an ever-changing landscape that includes early literacy, local history, traditional services (what is Reference, anyway?), and new opportunities, digital or otherwise.

The library district is supported largely by a property tax mill levy. The library director reports to a five-member board, which is appointed and responsible for all aspects of library finance and administration. The general fund budget is approximately $775,000 with a staff of 9.5 FTE and materials budget of $175,000. A host of data is available at http://www.lrs.org/public/data/basic/

The library director performs professional level organizational and library administrative work to provide excellent, efficient service to library patrons. The director also leads strategic planning, implements operational procedures, oversees personnel, develops and manages the annual budget and financial plans, oversees the integration of current technologies, and provides leadership in planning and maintaining the district’s facility.

The district is currently in great shape with fine staff, board, reputation, and finances.

Salary will be commensurate with experience.

The Community

The Southern Chaffee County Regional Library District comprises the southern half of Chaffee County, Colorado. The library is located in Salida, the county seat, across the street from Alpine Park near the historic downtown district and five blocks from the Arkansas River that flows by downtown. Salida is also a Colorado Certified Creative District. (Google map: http://tinyurl.com/nfbdakl) (https://www.facebook.com/salidachamber)

Monarch Ski Area is 21 miles west up Monarch Pass. There is a growing system of trails across the river from downtown and near city limits on Methodist Mountain. Eighty percent of the county is publicly owned land. The valley has ranches, community farms, fairgrounds, hot springs, breweries, distilleries, wineries, three cycle shops, four health food stores, an event center by the Arkansas River, kayak playholes downtown, a Gold Medal fishery upstream and down, etc. &c. Three new schools. And a great library. It’s lovely.

Salida sits at 7,083 feet (and up) and enjoys many days of sunshine per year (from 262 to 330, depending who you ask). It sits in a Banana Belt of sorts with relatively mild weather in all seasons. The district population is approximately 9,600 and the City of Salida about 5,400.

The district’s property valuation declined slightly after 2008 but is projected to rise again for 2016. The library has lived comfortably within its annual revenues for decades and has built a good fund balance for future projects. The1908 Carnegie library building received an addition in 1995 and another remodel in 2012; the district also owns the property next door, purchased in 2003 for future expansion.
