The Community

Mesa County Libraries operate eight locations throughout Mesa County, Colo. Mesa County (population 147,800) is located in the geographically diverse high desert of west-central Colorado. The eastern portion of the county includes the lake-dotted, 10,000-foot summit of Grand Mesa, the largest flat-top mountain in the world, and the western part of the county is home to deep redrock canyons.

Mesa County is a regional service center, providing shopping, medical, and other services to much of western Colorado and eastern Utah. Primary industries in Mesa County include tourism and recreation, health care, retail, services, and energy production. Mesa County is known as the peach and wine capital of Colorado; the area around the town of Palisade is famous for its high-quality peach orchards, vineyards, and an abundance of small wineries. Communities host a variety of events and festivals throughout the year, including bike races, concerts, sports tournaments, and general celebrations such as the Mike the Headless Chicken Festival in Fruita.

The largest city is Grand Junction (pop. 61,200), which is served by Grand Junction Regional Airport and is home to Colorado Mesa University. Other communities in Mesa County include Fruita (pop. 12,600), Palisade (pop. 2,600), Collbran (pop. 700), and De Beque (pop. 500).
