Job Description
Douglas County History Research Center at Douglas County Libraries seeks a graduate student to join our team as Special Collections Metadata Intern. This position will gain hands-on experience in creating, describing, and managing digital objects. The objective will be to create and manage a substantial amount of item-level metadata, including descriptions. The ideal candidate will be a self-motivator with excellent attention to detail, who is willing to quickly learn library and archives software applications. Work is performed under supervision of a Douglas County History Research Archivist.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Creates original, non-MARC catalog records, and enters content descriptions and technical details about the digital objects. This task requires implementation of descriptive standards outlined in DACS (Describing Archives: A Content Standard).
- Conducts online searches of authority files and assigns subjects headings and classification terms using independent professional judgment.
- Performs importing and exporting procedures between content management systems, in preparation for and facilitation of online retrieval and access.

- Analyze content of digital objects (research will be necessary for gaining intellectual control), and create quality metadata in accordance with department standards and guidelines.
- Develop and document workflows for metadata creation, and assist in planning metadata strategies and project roadmaps for subsequent interns.
- Demonstrates a professional, positive, cooperative, team-oriented working relationship with staff, c-workers, and volunteers.
- Must communicate effectively using English. Must read, write and understand English at a level appropriate to the position.

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION:Reading materials will supplement tasks and responsibilities. No skills in content management systems or image-editing software application are required. Work schedule will be 12-16 hours per week (scheduling times are flexible during normal business hours). Duration of internship will be 13 weeks, beginning January 11, 2016, and ending April 15, 2016. Weekly meetings with supervising Archivist will be expected.
