Job Description

The innovative Arapahoe Libraries has an exciting opening for an Early Literacy Librarian. If you have strong knowledge and a commitment to  early childhood literacy, excellent communication and technology skills, and a track record of success working with young families, joining the highly collaborative Child & Family Library Services early literacy  team may be the right step for you!  

Location: Koelbel Library, district-wide resource

Reports to: Supervisor, Early Literacy

Position:  Full-time, exempt

Pay Rate: $47,476.00- $62,800.00 annually, plus benefits   

 

Role: With the Child and Family Services team, develops and implements early literacy-based initiatives, and services aimed at children ages 0-5 and their parents and caregivers.

 

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

 

50% EARLY CHILDHOOD LITERACY PROGRAM & SERVICE DEVELOPMENT

Identify, recommend, promote, implement and evaluate early literacy programs and services for young children, parents and caregivers including but not limited to initiatives supporting early childhood library spaces, community outreach, web ad print content creation, technology integration and parent education.

 

30% PATRON ASSISTANCE

Conduct patron interviews, employ search strategies, provide advanced reference and reader's advisory services, and promote early literacy resources and services in order to satisfy patron awareness, needs and requests in and outside of the library. Develop meaningful relationships with families, caregivers and community stakeholders.

 

20% MENTORSHIP

Support library and storytime specialist staff through ongoing modeling, floor support, training and sharing of research-based early literacy resources, information and best practices.

 

Qualifications:

 

Two to five years of similar or related experience, required.

 

MLS or MLIS, required.

 

Ability to travel to other work/library locations, as needed, required.

 

Ability to periodically work weekends and evenings, required.

 

Understanding of early literacy and developmentally appropriate practices, required.

 

Knowledge of Every Child Ready to Read and Family Place Libraries philosophies, required.

 

Experience and confidence in developing and conducting effective storytimes and other children's programs, including working very confidently with parents, caregivers and diverse populations.

Confidence in working successfully on a team, required.

 

Familiarity with Family Place Library philosophy.

 

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

 

Demonstrated ability to learn and apply new technologies quickly.

 

Evidence of ability to manage multiple responsibilities in a changing environment.

 

Experience with grant-writing, preferred.

 

Experience in public service, including the ability to interact effectively with patrons and staff.

 

Advanced technology skills for Windows, Word, Excel, Internet Explorer, and Outlook, required.

 

Intermediate skills in Sierra, preferred.

 

Ability to demonstrate knowledge of library and information science theory, information creation, organization, and delivery as it applies to the Arapahoe Library District.

 

Ability to exhibit leadership skills including critical thinking, active listening, risk taking, and creativity, regardless of position within the organization structure.

 

Ability to exhibit an understanding of the importance of a multidisciplinary and cross-functional approach to programs and projects within the organization.

 

Ability to communicate openly, directly, clearly and respectfully with customers and colleagues to advance the interests of the library.

 

Ability to comfortably present information in a clear and engaging manner in dealing with customers and colleagues one-on-one or in groups, in both formal and informal settings.

 

Ability to be mobile 100% of the time and sit as needed; ability to bend, stoop, reach, and push a loaded book cart weighing up to 100 pounds.

 

Ability to focus on the customer, show integrity, be inclusive, enjoy children and families, enjoy learning and have fun.

 

Ability to exercise confidence and creativity in developing effective early literacy messaging for both online and print sources.

 

Ability to successfully work with varying demographics, required.
