The Community

The Public Services Supervisor oversees circulation functions, staff scheduling, and administrative support for the Library Division. Helps ensure a positive patron experience for all Library visitors.


This position will manage the Library Assistants, Shelvers, Substitute Staff and assigned Library Associates and Volunteers.

 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Serves on the Library Division leadership team. Assists in the development of policies and procedures.

Plans, organizes, schedules, supervises, and evaluates the work of assigned staff. Recommends selection of staff and provides for staff training and professional development.

Oversees and maintains patron account information. Handles patron inquiries, correspondence and complaints. Oversees patron and circulation functions of the integrated library system, including management of computer hardware, peripherals, and related equipment.

Provides direct assistance to patrons of all ages in use of library services and resources.

Reconciles daily cash reports. Provides administrative support for the Library Division.

Other Duties & Responsibilities

Assumes the duties and responsibilities of direct reports.

May represent the Library at community or professional events and meetings. Stays informed about City and community issues.

Orders and maintains supplies for the department.

Assists with building and patron safety including handling of emergency situations.

Oversees public bulletin boards and use of public display areas.

Performs other duties as assigned and required.

PREPARATION AND TRAINING

Education: Bachelor’s degree in any field required. Master’s Degree in Library and/or Information Science or related field preferred.

Work Experience: Minimum of 2 years’ of customer services experience in a public, academic or school library environment. Supervisory or Team Lead experience preferred.

An equivalent combination of education, training and relevant job experience may be substituted.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Working knowledge of:

• Library operations, programs and services
• Integrated library systems
• Personal technology, including smart phones and tablets

Basic knowledge of:
• Customer service standards
• Supervisory techniques
• General office procedures

 Skills and Abilities

Computer Skills - Advanced computer skills required in Microsoft Office Suite, integrated library systems, and personal technology devices such as smartphones and tablets.

Communication Skills- Advanced communications skills required in customer service to interact with patrons, handling any problems and complaints. Advanced verbal and written communication skills required to carry out instructions.

Analytical Skills - Advanced analytical skills required to handle emergency situations.

Project Management Skills – Advanced project management skills required to oversee division operations.

General Management Skills - Advanced management skills required to coordinate and direct the activities of personnel.

Mathematical Skill - Advanced mathematical skills required to reconcile cash reports, prepare deposits and prepare budget information.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Work is performed in a standard library environment, requiring standing for extended periods of time. Work may also be performed in a standard office environment, requiring sitting for extended periods of time. Must be able to perform occasional lifting (up to 15 lbs.). Job requires visual and physical capabilities to work on computers and associate equipment for extended periods of time.
