Job Description

Under general supervision, the BoulderReads Specialist provides external and internal customers with high-quality customer service focused on BoulderReads services and programs, and performs related duties as required.  BoulderReads is the adult and community literacy program of the Boulder Public Library and provides literacy, English language and life skills services to community learners from diverse groups via trained volunteers and innovative programming. The successful incumbent will be professional, adaptable and comfortable with technology-rich environments and is charged with modeling customer service behaviors which align with the Library customer service model and City Values.  

 Duties & Responsibilities:

  1. Creates a pleasant, friendly atmosphere for customers of BoulderReads and the Library through:
    1. Positive, friendly and patient interactions with all customers
    2. Maintaining fair and equitable application of policies and procedures
    3. Responding to and resolving customer issues that may include BoulderReads and Library policies
    4. Communicating professionally with all persons, either in person, on the telephone or via email to conduct BoulderReads and Library business as necessary.
  2. Interacts with the public and Library staff to provide program information and acts as a resource for other staff in their interactions with BoulderReads customers.
  3. Fields inquiries and functions as a general resource and support for BoulderReads customers, including volunteers, partners and learners

Monitors the BoulderReads general email account. Fields general inquiries via phone and email.

  1. Enters and tracks program statistics through monthly tutor reports and other sources. On a regular basis, enters program information into the Library calendar and event attendance into established software or programs
  2. Performs necessary clerical duties including: purchasing and organizing supplies, maintenance of paper and electronic files; processing materials, room scheduling and account tracking.
  3. In collaboration with colleagues, tracks program enrollment and participation through implementation of established policies and procedures.
  4. Under the direction of BoulderReads Manager, supports programs, special projects and partnerships such as the literacy lab, outreach events, etc.
  5. Under the direction of BoulderReads Manager, support the Conversations in English program, including recruiting volunteers, scheduling trainings and updating program information for the public, colleagues and BoulderReads partners.
  6. Assists with collection development and maintenance by making purchasing suggestions, placing orders, creating circulation reports, collaborating with Technical Services, weeding and day-to-day upkeep.
  7. Supports BoulderReads customers in the use of library materials, including the library catalog, databases and downloadable materials (eBooks, streaming audio and video, etc.)
  8. Keeps informed about best practices in the field of adult learning and program support
  1. Other:
    1. Performs related duties as required to meet the needs of the city.
    2. Takes proper safety precautions to prevent accidents.  Responsible for the safety of self, others, materials, and equipment.  Uses all required safety equipment and follows all safety regulations, policies and procedures.  Reports all accidents and damage to city property.
    3. Responsible for knowing and complying with all city and department policies; participating in professional trainings and development; and adhering to attendance and workplace attire policies.

 Qualifications:REQUIREMENTS:
Bachelor's degree and a minimum of two years of customer service experience; or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.  Experience serving customers in an educational, human service or library environment.  Ability to communicate courteously and effectively to all customers and provide professional service to the public, colleagues and others in person, by telephone and via written communication.  Willingness to take direction and learn a variety of tasks.  Experience and ability to work effectively and respectfully with people from a variety of cultural and linguistic backgrounds, ages, and abilities. Good organizational skills.  Proficient with technology skills including  Keyboarding, Windows-based personal computers, productivity software, and web and mobile applications.  Experience with data entry, management and electronic record-keeping.  Ability to work under minimal supervision.
 
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Bilingual/biliterate in Spanish.  Experience collaborating with and supporting volunteers.  Familiarity with adult learning and instruction, at-risk populations, library environments and print and electronic media.
Ability to work simultaneously on multiple projects over extended periods of time.

 Supplemental Information:WORKING CONDITIONS:
Physical and Mental Effort: Partially sedentary and partially standing physical work in an indoor setting, requiring the ability to lift a maximum of 25-30 pounds; occasional lifting, carrying, and walking.  Sufficient manual dexterity that permits the employee to operation computer equipment and other office equipment.  Sufficient vision or other powers of observation that permits the employee to review, evaluate and prepare a variety of written documents and materials.   Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing or other communication capabilities that permits the employee to communicate effectively on the telephone and in person.  Sufficient personal mobility and physical reflexes, which permits the employee to move throughout the work environment and work in an office setting.  Work may include extended periods of time viewing a computer video monitor and/ or operating a keyboard.  Ability to work under stress from demanding deadlines, public contact, and changing priorities and conditions.
Work Environment: Works primarily in an indoor office environment.  Works in a setting subject to continuous interruptions and background noises. 
Machine and equipment used in work include but are not limited to the following:  Frequently uses standard office equipment including personal computers, calculators, DVD player, video projector, telephone, copy machines, barcode and computer printers, eBook readers, digital cameras, and various audio-visual equipment.
