Job Description

The successful candidate for the Branch Head of the Jerry Crail Johnson Earth Sciences & Map Library is innovative and forward-thinking with a background in earth and/or environmental sciences. This position oversees services and collections supporting the Department of Geological Sciences, the Department of Geography, and the Environmental Studies Program. CU Boulder’s Geosciences program is ranked 2nd in the world by U.S. News and World Report. This position guides instruction and services for earth sciences, maps, GIS, and also plays an important role in the Libraries’ nascent effort toward building a spatial data infrastructure.

The Branch Head is a member of a team of science librarians that supports the teaching and research of scientists in the College of Arts & Sciences as well as several research institutes and centers. Collectively, the Sciences Department initiates and advances departmental missions and objectives. These include developing student-centered learning opportunities, advancing the role of libraries as communal spaces for their disciplines, advocating for change in scholarly communication, and building collections that are responsive to user needs. This position manages one librarian, four staff members, and over a dozen student assistants. A significant part of the responsibilities of this position includes research, creative work, and service in keeping with the tenure standards of the University of Colorado Boulder.

Appointment and Salary:  

Successful candidates will be appointed as full-time (12 month), tenure-stream faculty members.  Depending on professional experience, appointment will be at the assistant professor or associate professor level. The minimum starting salary is $65,000. Benefits include 22 working days of vacation, ten paid holidays, liberal sick leave, university group health care plans, group life insurance, TIAA administered retirement/annuity, and support for scholarly/professional activities. Tenured librarians are eligible for sabbatical leave.

Please address each of these qualifications in your application materials:

  • Master’s degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA-accredited library school;
  • Three or more years of experience in a science library or similar setting;
  • Two or more years of managerial/supervisory experience in an academic library or similar setting;
  • Two or more years of teaching experience in an academic library or similar setting;
  • Demonstrated experience fostering relationships between the library and academic departments (such as the earth sciences and geography);
  • Demonstrated knowledge of or experience working with print and digital map collections;
  • Capacity to manage time and multiple projects in a complex, changing environment;
  • Awareness of ongoing developments in library services for the geosciences;
  • Demonstrated ability to lead change;
  • Strong interpersonal skills and excellent oral and written communication skills;
  • An ability to work successfully and collegially in a collaborative environment with faculty, staff, and students from culturally diverse backgrounds;
  • Demonstrated ability to cultivate and advocate for a community of diversity and inclusion;
  • Potential for research, scholarly work, and professional service.

Desirable Qualifications

Evidence of any of the following will enhance a candidacy:

  • Degree with concentration in earth sciences or related disciplines and/or significant experience within a library focusing on these disciplines;
  • Experience in developing geoscience data services;
  • Experience in conducting constituent needs analyses;
  • Demonstrated strong analytical and organizational skills;
  • Evidence of achievement in research and creative work and professional service;
  • Demonstrated awareness of Federal Depository Library Program Legal Requirements and Guidance for maps;
  • Familiarity with programming languages used frequently in the earth sciences such as Python or R.
