Job Description

Is creating, inventing, and making part of your DNA ? inventHQ, the Broomfield Library Makerspace is hiring two Creative Technologists to build the community and capacity of our new makerspace.

We are looking for makers with experience teaching in  a formal or informal environments. Ideal candidates will be creative, flexible, unflappable, life-long learners who are passionate about helping others pursue their interests and ignite their creativity.

You would be a crucial team member by:

  • Supporting patrons exploring new technologies and learning new skills.

  • Helping patrons generate ideas for projects as well as assisting them in producing physical objects out of their ideas.

  • Planing original workshops and teaching groups of youth and adults how to use makerspace equipment.  

Essential Required Tasks/Examples of Duties

ESSENTIAL REQUIRED TASKS/EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

General Duties:

  • Assist patrons in the makerspace with a variety of machinery, including 3D printers, laser cutter, CNC router, small board electronics, electronic cutters, sewing and embroidery machines, etc.

  • Assist patrons by teaching them to use makerspace tools and software, providing creative inspiration for makerspace projects, making connections with other makerspace users who might be able to assist with projects, and recommending resources for patrons ideas.

  • Must be comfortable facilitating hands-on learning even when it is outside the incumbents area of expertise.

  • Assists the STEAM staff to provide programs and services that are responsive to community needs while sparking interest, curiosity, and fun, inspiring children, teens, adults, and intergenerational audiences to embrace their interests and ignite their creativity.  

  • Acts as a mentor by connecting patrons and staff with information, tools, and resources to pursue their passions.

  • Plan and conduct special makerspace programs; prepare publicity for all programs and services in assigned area.  

  • Conducts tours of makerspace and presents information to community organizations and groups.

  • Coordinates displays and sample projects for makerspace.  Researches the availability of grant monies and prepares grant applications; solicits funds and donations for makerspace programs in accordance with priorities set by the Library Strategic Plan.  Collaborates with other makerspace, library and city staff in developing services and programs.

  • Works with the city and consortium IT staff in diagnosing computer and network problems.

Budget/Resource Management:

  • The incumbent participates in the preparation of the department's annual budget.

  • Assures that responsibilities are performed within budget and performs cost control activities such as monitoring expenditures to assure sound fiscal control.

  • The incumbent is responsible for partnering with other staff members in planning, developing, and implementing the overall vision, mission, programs, processes and projects of the department.  

Public Relations/Communication:

  • The incumbent meets and confers with customers to explain departmental plans, programs, functions, policies, and procedures.  

  • Assists departmental staff in preparing and coordinating reports as required. Answers letters of inquiry/complaints and talk with customers.  

  • Attends meetings, workshops, and conventions as necessary for the maintenance of effective services.

Miscellaneous Duties:

  • He/she ensures that facilities and equipment are maintained properly and coordinate maintenance and repair functions.  

  • He/she takes proper safety precautions, anticipates unsafe circumstances, and acts accordingly to prevent accidents.

  • He/she uses all required safety equipment.  Responsible for the safety of self, others, assets, equipment and facilities; responsible for knowing and complying with all City and County of Broomfield and department policies; adheres to attendance and workplace attire policies.  

  • He/she performs related duties as required.

Additional Info & Requirements

Schedule is generally 10:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m., Tuesday-Saturday.
These positions require night and weekend work.

Three years experience teaching hands-on making activities in a formal or informal education setting. Previous experience with two or more of the following technologies: laser cutting and engraving, 3D printing and scanning, fiber arts, digital design software, small board electronic prototyping (Arduino, RaspberryPi, micro.bit, or basic circuitry), CNC fabrication or related makerspace technology.  Electronics experience preferred.

Any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides evidence that the applicant possesses the Necessary Applicant Traits.
