Job Description

Summary of Job Duties

The City of Aurora is seeking a Temporary Cataloging Coordinator to fill a temporary, part-time (15-20 hours per week) position in the Technical Services team at the Aurora Public Library. The Cataloging Coordinator will assist with processing incoming materials and maintaining the catalog. This is a great opportunity to gain or expand skills working with MARC records and RDA as well as gain experience in a technical services department. Most time will be spent processing new items and maintaining item and bibliographic records, but other activities could include:

  • Original cataloging
  • Catalog consistency projects
  • Material repair
  • Troubleshooting issues with the ILS (Sierra) or discovery layer
  • Running reports for circulation and item usage
  • Invoice reconciliation
  • Batch updating records
  • Ordering cataloging supplies
  • Importing new item and bibliographic records to the ILS (Sierra)
  • Importing e-content records in the discovery layer
  • Resolving catalog or collection related questions for library staff and customers.

We wear a lot of hats in this department which makes this role uniquely suited to someone who is a self-starter and wants to learn the ins and outs of library systems activities. The initial duration of the position is 3-6 months with the possibility of extension.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science (MLIS) from an ALA accredited program or currently enrolled in a MLIS program
  • Knowledge of Dewey Decimal Classification system and cataloging standards
  • Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Collaborative attitude and desire to work hard in a team setting
  • Interest in technology and library systems
  • Intermediate comfort with Excel and other Microsoft Office applications
  • Great communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • 1-2 years of cataloging experience
  • Familiarity with editing MARC records using RDA
  • Familiarity with FRBR or other hierarchical relationship models
  • Experience using Sierra and SkyRiver or other Innovative Interfaces, Inc. products
  • Understanding of relational databases and the ability to create basic queries

Compensation

$22.00 per hour

Schedule
