Job Description

The Reference Librarian performs professional work related to assisting patrons and maintaining collections. Selects, purchases, and maintains collection in designated area of responsibility. Reviews collection for removals and replacements. Provides reference service and reader’s advisory assistance to patrons. Assesses patrons needs and instructs them in making effective use of Library resources. Assists patrons with the use of the Internet. Acts as Librarian in Charge during evening and weekend hours or in the absence of the Library Director or managers. Promotes use of library materials through display, handouts, programs, etc. Trains and works with volunteers. Performs other duties as assigned and required.

Additional Info & Requirements

Requires a Masters of Library Science Degree and a minimum of one year experience in a library environment. Must have working knowledge of: standard library practices, including collection development; reference materials, both print and electronic the Internet; basic knowledge of Microsoft Office. Basic computer skills needed to use and evaluate electronic reference materials. Also needed to work with word processing and spreadsheet programs. Strong Internet skills needed to instruct others on Internet use. Strong customer service skills needed to determine patrons’ needs. Strong analytical skills required to deduce patrons’ needs and wants by using reference interviewing methods. Strong analytical skills also required to evaluate collection materials and programs. Basic mechanical skills needed for routine operation and problem solving of library equipment, including but not limited to computers, printers, copiers, and microfiche reader printer. Strong analytical skills needed to problem solve on the spot. Basic general management skills needed to cost-effectively allocate budget for materials and to execute procedures and policies as Librarian in Charge. Basic math skills for budget purchases and purchase card reconcilement.
