Job Description

The Reference Librarian in this position should possess unique or special skills, background, and/or training to function as the departmental “specialist” in the young adult area. Works directly with the public and provides general assistance to Library patrons. Provides reference service and reader’s advisory assistance to patrons. Assesses patrons needs and instructs them in making effective use of Library resources. Assists patrons with the use of the Internet. Maintains collection in designated area of responsibility. Selects and purchases printed and audio materials within allocated budget based on patron feedback and current book reviews. Reviews collection for removals and replacements. Serves as “Librarian in Charge” during evening or weekend hours or in the absence of departmental management.

Additional Info & Requirements

Requires a Masters Degree in Library Information Science and a minimum of one year experience in a library environment. Excellent communication and customer service skills also required. Experience in young adult book selection and programming is highly desired. Must be a self-starter and a team player. Experience in a public library and reference services and materials selection is preferred. Computer skills with library applications are required. An equivalent combination of education, training, or relevant work experience may be substituted.
