Job Description

Responsible for the overall supervision of the registration unit, specialized borrower services including foreign language programs, assistive technology support, and public library collaboration; outreach services and public education activities; needs assessment; planning; and service coordination for the department under the general direction of the Director; responsible for overall library operations, in the absence of the Director. Duties/Responsibilities: Plans and administers program of library services by performing the following duties personally or through subordinate supervisors. Assists the Director in planning the promotion, public relations and interagency communication of library services; produces targeted informational materials for patrons; conducts specialized training sessions; coordinates the scheduling of library representatives to present at support group presentations, constituent organization meetings, conferences, exhibits, etc; Assists Director in the preparation and follow-up for Advisor Board. Develops and implements evaluation and outreach methodologies to improve Library services and reporting findings; makes recommendations to improve service responsiveness to identified needs. Responsible for recruitment, interviewing, hiring, and training of new staff in collaboration with the Registration Services Manager for the Registration Services unit; as well as volunteers. Recommends titles to be produced in audio and Braille to meet user needs; participates in the Book Selection Committee process; provides input into the acquisition/Copy Allotment Process for Braille and recorded audio titles; assists with the annual Copy Allotment quota levels for Braille and recorded materials with the Collection Management Librarian; recommends collection weeding strategies and priorities to the Director. Performs other related duties and task as assigned. Supervisory Responsibilities: Manages subordinate Registration Services Manager, Outreach Services Coordinator and the Equipment Services Specialist. Is responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of units. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems. Responsible for the direct supervision and conducts regularly scheduled staff meetings to improve internal communications, procedures, and delivery of services to patrons.

Additional Info & Requirements

Minimum Qualifications: Master's degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited program; with two years Library of Congress program and two years supervisory experience and/or equivalent combination of education and experience; Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups, managers, clients, constituents, and the general public. Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to write clearly and communicate verbally with patrons and staff; ability to listen to phone calls and clearly speak to Library borrowers; ability to move materials and carry items for short distances without assistance; ability to lift up to 20 pounds without assistance. Preference may be given to candidates with the following additional training or experience: Knowledge of the NLS Braille and Talking Book library network, volunteer services to people with print disabilities, local or regional agencies serving blind and disabled individuals; broad literary background; knowledge of braille literary code; previous experience working with blind, visually impaired, physically disabled and/or multi-impaired individuals.
