OVERVIEW OF POSITION

The Library Clerk provides the highest level of customer service assisting library customers with circulation services, account help, finding library resources and assisting with programs. ?Strong customer services skills, attention to detail, genuine interest in helping people from in a diverse community of all ages and a friendly demeanor are essential for success in this position. 


This is a full-time position at the Hoffman Heights Library and Martin Luther King Jr. Library. The current hours will be Tuesday-Saturday, 9am – 6 pm. This position may be hired to work primarily at a specific facility with a primary focus but will substitute at other locations as needed and depending upon staffing needs, and may be re-assigned to a different primary facility.

Department Information

The Library and Cultural Services Departments vision is to empower an environment of lifelong learning and cultural enrichment by stimulating learning and literacy, inspiring creativity, and integrating arts, culture and history into the lives of Aurorans.  We have two divisions within the department: Library and Cultural Services, both offering a variety of free programs and services to the community.

The City of Aurora will conduct ongoing screenings of applications on a first come-first serve basis; as soon as we determine to have a qualified pool of applicants, this position may close quickly and without notice.

PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Incumbents perform basic and routine customer service functions such as: 

  • Provides friendly and professional customer assistance for library service needs
  • Checks books/other items in and out through computerized system
  • Answers general customer questions regarding library policy, procedures and customer accounts
  • Answers basic reference, reader's advisory and general customer questions
  • Redirects more advanced reference questions to Reference staff as appropriate
  • Operates a cash register, conducts customer payment transactions, maintains a cash drawer
  • Performs data entry into library system, spreadsheet and other databases
  • Sorts, processes, shelves and assists with other general library materials inventory management duties
  • Assists with research and programs as needed
  • Proactively ensures that library space is neat and organized (e.g. furniture and equipment is in order, shelves are well organized, displays are creative and refreshed regularly)
  • Provides friendly, efficient and professional service to customers in-person, by telephone and email
  • Conducts general office/administrative/clerical tasks as needed
  • Performs additional duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

An equivalent combination of education, training and experience that demonstrates required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.

Education:  

  • High School Diploma or GED

Experience:  

  • At least six (6) months customer service and/or retail experience

Preferred Experience:  

  • Experience within a library system
  • Preference for Spanish proficiency

Licenses and Certifications Required:  

  • Driver license

Knowledge of:

  • Customer service techniques
  • Routine software/computer systems including the internet, email, word processing, spreadsheets, and inventory/customer transaction systems

Abilities to:  

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and citizens
  • Ability to deal with stressful situations with tact and diplomacy
  • Communicate with diverse customers/staff of all ages in a professional, age and culturally, appropriate manner
  • Use general office equipment, computers, calculators, and copy/fax machine
  • Perform basic mathematical calculations
  • Follow oral and written instructions
  • Work shifts, including some nights, and weekends
  • Ability to speak a second language a plus

WORKING CONDITIONS

Essential Personnel: 

  • When a local announcement of emergency or disaster is declared by the City, all City of Aurora employees may be required to work as essential personnel.

Physical Demands: 

  • Heavy physical work requiring ability to lift a maximum of 50 pounds
  • Frequent lifting, carrying, walking and standing
  • Clear vision to reading and interpreting reports, documents and other written information
  • Frequent hand/eye coordination for operation of computer and other office equipment
  • Speech communication and hearing to maintain communication with employees and citizens

Work Environment:

  • Works primarily in a clean, comfortable environment with shared work stations and equipment
  • This job could be challenging at times, due to working in an environment that includes many distractions and interruptions
  • Shift work to include days, nights, weekends and occasional holidays
  • Must be willing to work at least one closing shift

Equipment Used:

  • Uses standard office equipment including: personal computer; microfilm equipment; multi-line telephones; copy/fax machine
  • This position may require the incumbent to use personal equipment (e.g. vehicle, cell phone, tools, etc.) in the course of their employment
