Job Description

KEY COMPETENCIES: Leadership Articulate a compelling vision of high-quality branch services; establish direction for the branch managers; coach direct reports on enhanced performance development; hold direct reports accountable for achieving library-wide goals; and, assess progress in goals and adjust as necessary. Adaptability/Flexibility Show enthusiasm and ask questions when implementing a new process; recommend strategies to improve services; fill in staffing absences as needed; and, accept new policies and procedures and communicates them to direct reports in a positive manner. Confidence Participate as a regular contributor in discussions during meetings; advocate for areas of direct responsibility; address personnel issues in a timely manner; establish and maintain relationships with staff members throughout Mesa County Libraries; and, establish and maintain relationships with community members People Skills Communicate effectively by listening and speaking in a respectful manner; build relationships and establish rapport with other staff members, and consistently demonstrate traits of emotional intelligence such as self-awareness, self-management, social awareness and effective relationship management. Collaboration & Influence Meet regularly with those in functional relationships; work across departments to offer library services and programs that meet community needs; ensure that procedures district-wide are consistent and allow for excellent customer service; Library Assistants are routinely scheduled to work at different locations and work together as one big team; the branch staff members know and feel they are part of what is happening district-wide. Strategic Orientation Prioritize and schedule resources according to actual need/demand; mentor, coach and recommend training for staff that helps them grow within their job and beyond; anticipate opportunities and threats with a thought-out plan and action; assist other managers in meeting their objectives; and, take on projects for the library that are not directly tied to branch activities. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Supervise Staff Develop direct reports with coaching and ongoing training opportunities. Provide feedback on an ongoing basis and evaluate annually. Hire and train new staff to be able to accomplish assigned objectives. Address employee performance problems in a proactive direct manner. Oversee Branch Operations Schedule personnel and resources, organize and establish branch priorities, and coordinate branch activities for optimum patron benefit. Work with staff from the Central Library to coordinate library programs and services so that patrons throughout Mesa County receive consistent high-level service. Work closely with organizations and personnel that host branch libraries to best provide library service in the community. Prepare and administer a budget for capital and supply purchases to meet goals and objectives of the branches. Management Team Participate in the Library District’s management team. Work with other managers to develop needed policies and procedures for the library, and interpret these for staff and patrons. Serve as an example for all staff in providing library service and communicating expectations. Actively participate and contribute to various library committees and activities Performs other duties as assigned or requested – To perform additional duties as opportunities arise that assist the Library in achieving specified goals and objectives.
