Job Description

Duties and Responsibilities:  Provides efficient, courteous public service and presents a positive image of the library in attitude, appearance and performance of duties.  Assists in developing children’s library policy.  Selects, trains and supervises staff to perform the work of the Children’s Service Department.  Creates an environment that encourages learning, reading, and use of the library by children.  Engages in library outreach activities such as addressing school classrooms, youth groups, service organizations, and parent organizations.  Plans and coordinates children’s services within the WSD#3 schools, the Widefield Community Center, and the local community.  Designs, promotes, executes, and evaluates weekly preschool and school-aged programs, outreach, and services for children.  Develops and implements special programs. Contacts performers or presenters, and negotiates fees and schedules.  Creates bibliographies, user guides, promotional materials, and publicity spotlighting Children’s Department collections, services, and programs. Plans and coordinates library participation in annual community parade.  Develops and implements a summer reading program for children, pre-school through 5th grade, by choosing the theme, planning programs, purchasing incentives, soliciting donations, interfacing with schools, and distributing publicity.  Provides library tours for all WSD#3 elementary schools, as well as scout troops, church groups, daycares, and homeschools.  Maintains statistical records and provides monthly reports.  Insures that circulation procedures maintain patrons’ confidentiality.  Makes administrative and supervisory decisions as necessary and appropriate.  Responsible for collection development of children’s reading area, and withdraws outdated and worn materials.  Creates displays to enhance the library experience and to promote use of library resources for children’s and adult services. Including outdoor and foyer display cases.  Attends conferences, workshops, and meetings and reads professional literature to stay informed on issues related to children’s library services.  Provides reference and reader’s advisory guidance to children, parents, and teachers.  Performs desk duties in the adult and children’s area, as needed.  Shelves library materials.  Other duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Ability to keep confidential records and performs routine tasks; ability to learn library methods, techniques and computerized databases; work in a team environment; use good judgment. Ability to perform repetitive tasks accurately; pay attention to detail. Ability to work nights and weekends, as needed.

Mon./Tues./Thurs./Friday 8:30-5; Weds. 11:30-8 Requires a 4 year college degree with a minimum of one year's previous library experience or three years working with children. Basic Function: Under the supervision of the Library Director, performs responsible and varied administrative and professional library work related to planning, organizing, and directing the activities of the Children’s Department. Physical Requirements: Hearing and vision corrected to normal ranges. Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds, and push a loaded book truck weighing 120 pounds. Ability to reach up to seven feet to retrieve and replace books with a stool or ladder, as needed. Qualifications: ALA-accredited MLS degree preferred, or any equivalent combination of education and/or training that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities as approved by the Director. Enroll in a master’s degree program (MLS) within two years of hire date to be completed within six years. Ability to supervise personnel; keep abreast of current library trends in the provision of library service to youth; operate equipment as required by the position; establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and library patrons. Familiarity with personal computers and appropriate software required. May require a valid Colorado driver’s license.
