Job Description

Under the supervision of the Library Board of Trustees, the director is responsible for the effective operations of the library system, and the development and implementation of its service programs to include, but not limited to, the following responsibilities: 1) Assist the board with long-range planning, budget and policy development, and managing all library resources, including personnel and an annual budget ($200k/year). 2) Seek, receive, manage, and expend library funds according to established guidelines, and maintain accurate and up-to-date records showing the status of library finances. Perform bookkeeping duties to include management of accounts, accounts payable/receivable, payroll, and preparation of the annual budget with the assistance of a professional bookkeeper, library board trustees, and library branch manager. 3) Recruit, select, hire, train, supervise, evaluate, and terminate library staff in conformity with library policy, state and federal laws. Currently, there are eleven employees in both libraries, to include a branch manager in the Ten Sleep Library. 4) Manage and organize the acquisitions, access, storage, and control of collections. 5) Design, implement, and coordinate services and programs for patrons of all ages. 6) Oversee the maintenance and safety of the library building(s). 7) Serve as primary representative of the library system by developing and sustaining positive public relations with community organizations, businesses, and city/county officials. Write a monthly local newspaper column to report library system news, information, activities, and updates to the public. 8) Attend monthly meetings with the County Commissioners to report library system news, information, activities, and updates. Competencies: In addition to library and/or business operations and administrative knowledge and skills, the following are essential professional skills required: 1) Excellent interpersonal, leadership, public speaking, and customer service skills, with a positive attitude. 2) Ability to effectively communicate ideas and information in verbal and written forms, and in group or public speaking situations. 3) Ability to work effectively with staff, volunteers, patrons, governing boards, community groups, elected officials, peers and colleagues. 4) Knowledge of ALA guidelines and procedures, and public library philosophy, principles, standards, ethics, and operating procedures. 5) Ability to effectively recruit, motivate, and supervise staff and volunteers, make sound decisions, and delegate responsibility in a productive, efficient manner. 6) Ability to identify priorities, develop goals and strategies to achieve them, meet deadlines, assess patron needs, and provide quality library services to the community. 7) Ability to travel to state and regional library conferences and professional trainings; demonstrate a willingness and desire to seek knowledge on current trends in library management, services, and information and technology.

Additional Info & Requirements

Plans have been initiated to design and build a new library within the next four years, and the director will have an active leadership role in the planning, development, and promotion of this exciting new project.

The Washakie County Library System is seeking a qualified director for a rural library in Worland, WY with a branch library in Ten Sleep, located in the beautiful Big Horn Basin. Preference will be given to applicants with a MLS/MLIS and experience working in a library environment, to include staff supervision and excellent interpersonal skills. Candidates with a BLS/BLIS and library management experience will be considered. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
