Job Description

Plan, organize, coordinate, and supervise a wide range of library activities for the library’s circulation services program area including materials circulation, patron registration and materials re-shelving. Administer assigned area of library operations to achieve goals within available resources and in accordance with priorities set by the Library Strategic Plan. Plan and organize workloads and staff assignments; train, motivate and evaluate assigned staff; review progress, enhance employee development and direct change as needed. Maintain harmony among employees and resolve grievances and complaints. Review applications and participate in the interview process. Recruit, train and supervise volunteers. Take proper safety precautions, anticipate unsafe circumstances, and act accordingly to prevent accidents. Use all required safety equipment. Assure that assigned areas of responsibility are performed within budget; perform cost control activities; monitor revenues and expenditures in assigned areas to assure sound fiscal control; assure effective and efficient use of budgeted funds, personnel, materials, facilities, and time. Identify and recommend improvements in divisional and departmental operations to ensure support functions are efficient and cost effective. Provide input to budget for assigned area. Manage public service desk activities and serve at desk by providing direct service to patrons including checking library books and other materials in and out, registering patrons for borrower’s cards, examining materials for damage and preparing items to be shelved or repaired. Respond to patrons’ requests for assistance in-person or via telephone; assist patrons in the use of public-access catalogs, the collections and resource materials; explain and enforce library policies and procedures. Assess fines and costs of damaged or lost materials. Handle patron problems dealing with circulation functions. Administer the library’s homebound delivery service and cooperative Prospector program. Responsible for publicity and promotion for all programs and services in assigned area. Prepare written reports and compile statistics in support of circulation services. Oversee maintenance of library computers, facilities, and other equipment and machinery; and resolves operational problems or forwards maintenance requests as appropriate. Participate on the library’s management team to develop short and long-range plans, policies and procedures, and problem-solving for the library as a whole. Communicate with other members about management issues and priorities. Recommend policies and administrative action to team. Attend meetings and communicate decisions with staff, as appropriate. Assist with library-wide projects such collection inventory and promotional efforts. Represent the library on city and county committees as assigned, and in regional circulation groups. Plan and coordinate the operations and policies of the shared ILS system, especially as it relates to circulation issues, with other Flatirons Library Consortia members. Analyze technological advances and recommend appropriate applications. Evaluates service costs and makes related recommendations. Identifies and recommends improvements in divisional and departmental operations to ensure assigned functions are efficient and cost effective. Takes proper safety precautions, anticipates unsafe circumstances, and acts accordingly to prevent accidents. Uses all required safety equipment. Performs related duties as required.

Additional Info & Requirements

Position requires: Four years of customer service work experience which includes at least one year in a library setting. Two years of supervisory experience is also required and may run concurrent with work experience. Library experience in circulation services is preferred.
