Job Description

The Library Assistant is responsible for duties related to Interlibrary/Intercampus Loan, Prospector, Circulation and Reserves. The duties require competence in various computer systems, including Innovate Interface, ILLiad, OCLC, Rapid and Prospector. This position assures all aspects of the Copyright Law and Interlibrary Loan Code, and reciprocal agreements between libraries are being met by the Institution; and provides quality customer service via a service desk, telephone and email to multiage, multicultural clientele located world-wide. The Library Assistant trains, assigns work, and supervises student workers in operation of circulation, interlibrary/intercampus loans, Rapid, and Prospector; shelves and shifts books, newspapers and periodicals, files microfiche and maintains orderliness of library; processes incoming requests received from students, staff, faculty and other libraries; sends materials and notifies local patrons for pick-up; screens and answers or refers inquiries, both in person and over the telephone, as appropriate; and assists patrons with reference questions when reference librarian is busy or is not on duty. This person processes materials for electronic reserve system and regular reserves; provides oversight of the library during duty hours in the absence of the Dean, the Access Services Manager and Reference Librarian; instructs patrons on locating books, periodicals, and government documents on the on-line automated catalog; opens and closes library, prepares computers, Santo Collection and cash drawer accordingly; ensures patron safety by identifying emergency situations and notifying authorities; notifies patrons and/or clears the building as necessary when no reference librarian is on duty; monitors alarm systems for library collections and building security and communicates with security personnel when necessary; participates in extended hours during mid-terms and finals weeks; performs other duties as assigned; and performs related duties as necessary to support the Regis mission.

Additional Info & Requirements

High school diploma required. Successful candidates will have previous experience working with the public; evidence of excellent communication skills, both oral and written; the ability to maintain poise while effectively managing a multi-task operation; the demonstrated ability to supervise student workers; the demonstrated ability to work effectively with a diverse clientele; and demonstrated computer skills. Prior experience with a circulation and interlibrary loan module of an automated library system preferred.
