Job Description

Background Information: This is an opportunity for a library manager who is innovative, creative and driven to join our Central Library and Collections and Technology management teams. It’s a role for a challenge seeker who will lead and guide the work of two departments, Web Information Services (WIS) and the Community Technology Center (CTC). Web Information Services: This team supports the visions of the Library by serving the needs of Denver’s online information seekers with the creation, maintenance and support of the Library’s six primary web sites, its social networks, electronic newsletters, RSS feeds, subscription databases, downloadable media, and electronic marketing of library services and resources. In 2009, the library is on track to have over 58 million online transactions. Community Technology Center: This team is responsible for planning and overseeing customer training and experiences related to computer use at the Central Library. A new Community Technology Center is scheduled to open in early 2010 in order to create This will create a large convenient public computing center staffed by technology experts, interns and docents. Ultimately, the CTC will consist of a small classroom with 13 workstations, a large 37-station classroom, two one-on-one consultation rooms and a large open area with 200 public computers. Duties and Responsibilities: LEADERSHIP: With the Division Director and IT Manager, leads the CTC and WIS teams in the planning and implementation of 3 strategic initiatives identified in the Balanced Scorecard: Create a customer technology training program, implement interactive Web 2.0 technologies and develop a formal staff technology training program. Guides staff, docents and volunteers with an inspirational, forward looking vision that encourages innovation and best practices. Serves on two management teams working collaboratively to formulate and achieve the Library’s strategic initiatives. Creates a work environment that encourages high performance. Develops and sustains strong relationships with staff from all library divisions and community partners. MANAGEMENT: Develops budgets, controls expenditures and develops procedures for responsible use of all resources. Delegates responsibility and authority to Senior Librarians (1 for each team) and other team members. Directs staff selection, development, training, discipline and evaluation. Works with Facilities and Security to ensure library facilities are clean, safe and attractive. Develops and tracks performance measures. TECHNICAL: Participates in the implementation a new integrated library system, public access catalog and a main library web site driven by Drupal. Stays current with library and technology trends and community needs. Develops and implements initiatives to deliver quality digital and other technology services. Maintains regular communication with other agencies, institutions and organizations. Recommends changes in workflow and operational procedures. Uses available tools and programs to develop communications and presentations. TEAMBUILDING: Fosters a collaborative team environment. Manages the Web Information Services and Community Technology Center teams based on trust and open communication. Communicates effectively with colleagues, internal and external customers, and partners. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of the Web and technology, online trends and popular culture. Knowledge of managerial principles and practices. Ability to develop the Library’s mission, values and vision into action plans for technology resources and services. Skill in selecting, training, motivating, evaluating and supervising staff. Skill in creative problem solving and negotiating stressful situations in a positive manner. Skill in building strategic partnerships. Ability to bring a positive energy, excellent interpersonal skills, cultural sensitivity and a sense of humor to the workplace. Ability to work in a collaborative team environment. Ability to demonstrate innovation and flexibility. Ability to assist with fundraising. Experience: Three years of professional library experience. Two years supervisory experience. Experience in providing high volume, innovative library service in an online and/or technology environment necessary. Experience with collaborative management processes. Experience with grant-writing/fundraising, strategic planning(especially the Balanced Scorecard) and vendor negotiation/product analysis preferred.
