Job Description

PCCLD is seeking a Youth Services Library Assistant who is skilled in developing programs for youth, conducting story times, and providing excellent customer service. The ideal candidate will have library experience working with children of all ages and their parents and will possess knowledge of library resources, databases, and catalog systems. PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES • Provides proactive customer service by anticipating customer needs, responding to requests, locating materials and by utilizing all library resources. • Assists customers with use of computer catalog, public access computers, electronic databases, use of the Internet, CD-ROM programs, and other equipment. • Plans story time programs for various age groups which incorporate pre-literacy skills as outlined in the Every Child Ready to Read Program. This includes selecting appropriate materials of interest, props and creative visual aids. Presents programs by engaging the audience and encouraging interactive exchange. • Maintains program attendance statistics and performs other administrative duties. • Follows detailed guidelines and operational procedures including learning and implementing new processes as they go into effect. • Assists in the training of other employees and volunteers for specific tasks; may supervise work for special projects as assigned by the supervisor. • Is able to demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills, build good relationships and deal positively with customers of all ages while enforcing behavioral expectations and library policies.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: Bachelor's degree required plus a minimum of one year library work experience or other related experience. Prior experience working with youth is preferred. Spanish speaking skills are a plus. SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED: • Intermediate computer skills using Microsoft Office suite, the internet and use of databases with the ability to learn and teach new software programs. • Must be able to learn and use research techniques and new technology resources. • Ability to engage with babies, children and parents to create a positive library experience. • Excellent interpersonal communications skills including the ability to participate as a team member, actively listen and resolve problems. • Ability to work within flexible and changing conditions by adapting and being resourceful. PHYSICAL ABILITIES REQUIRED: Must have the ability to work a flexible schedule that includes nights and weekends. Job requires hours of standing and repetitive motions. Must have the physical ability to stand, walk and bend 76 to 100% of the time; reach, stoop, squat, crouch and push 51 to 75% of the time; and climb, balance, kneel and pull 0 to 25% of the time. Must be able to lift 50 pounds and push a fully loaded book cart weighing 200 lbs. OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must pass a criminal background investigation. Must have good driving record, current Colorado Driver’s License and automobile insurance.
