Job Description
The Technical Services Assistant will work under the direction of the Technical Services Librarian providing technical assistance in the organization and maintenance of serial standing orders as well as monographic database maintenance; building computer records by utilizing the serials, circulation and bibliographic maintenance modules of an online computer database (Innovative Interfaces, Inc.); and supervising and training the student assistants. The Technical Services Assistant will process, on a daily basis, standing orders and continuations, including searching the online catalog; locating the correct bibliographic record, linking the volume to that record and recording location, status type and item type; transferring outdated material to proper location (stacks, Colorado Springs, return to publisher); deleting withdrawn holdings record, if appropriate; withdrawing superseded supplements; and correctly labeling and marking volume. The Technical Services Assistant will revise monographic bibliographic records in the online database on an as needed basis to correct or update information, including updating subject headings, location codes, and filing indicators; delete records for lost and missing books in bibliographic maintenance; distribute a list of browsing books subject to possible weeding, using the create list function of III; weed or add to permanent collection; and delete holdings symbol from OCLC. This person will supervise and train work study students in final processing of materials (inserting pockets, adhering spine labels, linking the bibliographic record to book via III terminal and bar code label) on a daily basis in preparation for circulation system and supervise mending of damaged materials, including re-labeling on III; search the Library of Congress database and other bibliographic sources for copy cataloging of unusual or hard to locate material; preview in-house video productions for bibliographic data including: title, length, format, participants, and general subject content, and refer results to Cataloging Supervisor for input. In addition, the Technical Services Assistant will process archival and special collection materials (rare materials which require special handling); distribute mail to all departments on a daily basis; and process monographic material as variances in student staffing dictates.Additional Info & Requirements
The successful candidate will have one year of supervisory experience; strong typing and filing skills; demonstrated computer skills; familiarity with a computerized catalog and the subsystems within that catalog (e.g. OCLC and III); working knowledge of the MARC record; familiarity with national library standards and practices (e.g. AACR2); and basic knowledge of library terminology and the major functions of library work.HR Info
