Job Description

Library Data Coordinator and Web Developer - Is this the job for you? The person who will be successful and happy in the Library Data Coordinator and Web Developer position will enjoy using technology to provide access to information, especially data and statistics. S/he knows that technology is a tool-a means to an end-not a final destination. Very comfortable with change, the person in this position understands the always-in-beta nature of technology and thrives in the lifelong learning culture of the library profession. This position requires a user-centered approach to creating and maintaining the LRS websites-LRS.org, LibraryJobline.org, and DART (Data Analysis Resource Tools) -using HTML, CSS, PHP, MySQL, Javascript and JQuery. The person in this position should thrive on variety and have the ability to manage multiple projects, including prioritizing work flow and meeting deadlines. Data coordination duties include insuring the many data sets maintained in MySQL are up-to-date, error-free, and being accessed correctly. It also requires using web development skills to create data collection and analysis tools. Examples include calculators (e.g., wage calculator), data tools (e.g., random date generator), survey instruments (e.g., online questionnaires) and DART (collects number and types of questions at the reference desk). This position provides technical support and trouble shooting for LRS websites and data collection tools. Although a fairly small part of the job, this technical assistance is sometime urgent and occurs regularly. The person in this position will need the ability to juggle these "interruptions" with other duties and prioritize appropriately. The person in this position will need to identify appropriate technologies to facilitate the successful use of LRS.org, including eliminating the obsolete, skipping the trendy, and exploring the promising. He or she will enjoy finding creative, highly-functional solutions to technology dilemmas and have a desire to share these solutions with others. Possessing the ability to see the global or broader view of LRS within the State Library within CDE within the Colorado library community within the library/education field is a key to success. In other words, the person in this position needs to be able to perform the practical, every day nuts-and-bolts of the job, as well as conceptualize the "bigger picture" beyond the confines of the State Library and the limits of the here-and-now. Ideally, the person in this position would have a background in statistics. However, an appreciation of the role data and statistics play in decision making and a curiosity to learn would go a long way. LRS is part of a vibrant, collegial State Library that encourages collaboration among all staff. LRS staff has worked with the other units of the State Library on outcome-based evaluation, data analysis, survey administration, available data acquisition, etc. This position reports to the Director of the Library Research Service and will be supported by and supportive of other LRS staff in a highly cooperative work environment. However, the ability to "stick one's head in the computer" for hours at a time will be vital to website and data tool development. This position is for a person who likes a balance of human interaction and time to think and work independently. The web developer will also contribute to mentoring the University of Denver Research Fellows (interns) at LRS-a rewarding and challenging opportunity to assist and influence the next generation of librarians. As a mentor, the person in this position will help research fellows understand online tools for finding, analyzing, and reporting statistics. Broad Scope of Position: Responsible for the daily operations and development of websites under the control of the Library Research Service (LRS) to ensure that library staff and administrators, educators, and state and local decision-makers have access to the research and data needed to improve library services to Colorado residents, and especially students and teachers. Preferred Qualifications: - Experience with PHP, MySQL, Javascript and jQuery. - Ability to maintain and develop interactive web-based statistical tools using PHP and MySQL databases. - Ability to track, synthesize, share, and implement technology innovations as appropriate to LRS, the Colorado State Library (CSL), and the library community. - Ability to manage multiple priorities using well-developed project management skills. - Knowledge of statistics and statistical analysis software. - Proven leadership and vision implementing technology solutions. - Experience developing and delivering online and face-to-face instructions and training. - Ability to make successful presentations at conferences, workshops, retreats, and other meetings. - Experience working in libraries or related organizations. This position is employed by the Colorado State Library, a division within the Colorado Department of Education (CDE). It reports to the Director of Library Research Service.
