Job Description

Join the number one-rated library district in the nation (rated number one in our population range – see Hennen’s American Public Library Ratings)! Douglas County Libraries, headquartered in Castle Rock, Colorado (just south of Denver and north of Colorado Springs), is seeking a knowledgeable and experienced Associate Director of Finance to join our leadership team. We are one of the largest library systems in Colorado. In 2009 our patrons checked out almost 8 million items (a 10% increase over the previous year) and asked 333,555 reference questions. We serve almost 250,000 residents in the county. We are not just distributors of books, bytes, music, and movies. (Although we're good at that, too -- with an average per capita circulation of over 25 per year.) We are catalysts for community change and active civic engagement. Come visit our website (DouglasCountyLibraries.org) and learn about us. Then, if you want to join a team defining the future of our profession, apply for the job. In its twenty year history, the Douglas County Libraries has paid cash for all of its libraries. All of its buildings are paid for; we have no debt. Using a combination of performance benchmarks and internal fiscal controls, the library saves up to 7% of its revenue annually. Financial stewardship is a core value of the district. If you are our ideal candidate, you are a dynamic and forward-thinking leader, a detail-oriented and exacting finance professional, an excellent communicator and a supportive team player. You are eager to lead efforts to fulfill our organization’s vision and mission through the effective and responsible management of our finance department. You will also be an engaged and supportive leader of our Facilities and Foundation departments. Under the direction of the Library Director, this position has responsibility and oversight of staff responsible for all financial functions of the Library and the Foundation including general accounting, budgeting, payroll, purchasing, accounts payable, fixed assets and internal controls. The position implements and maintains financial systems, policies and procedures. Additionally, the position partners with the Associate Director of Human Resources on payroll administration, as well as benefits and other personnel budget issues. The Associate Director of Finance is a key player on our leadership team.

The Community

Douglas County has been nationally recognized as a great place to live, work and raise a family. In a May 2004 study, by the American City Business Journals (ACBJ), Douglas County ranked fourth in the nation for Quality of Life. ACBJ used 20 statistical indicators to rate living conditions in all 3,141 counties and independent cities across the nation. Douglas County ranked particularly well in the household income, homeownership rate and educational attainment categories. Combine those with our great location, excellent schools, wonderful weather and outstanding recreational and cultural opportunities and you will understand our high rank in the Quality of Life study.
