Job Description

Nature of Work: This position is located in the Preservation Department of the University Libraries and provides basic conservation treatments such as pamphlet binding, heat set tissue mends, hinge mends and spine mends; assists staff in the Rescued books workflow by searching databases to find and record data on circulation or holdings to the Preservation Analysis & Management unit in making cost effective treatment decisions; and prepares damaged books for shipments.

Minimum Requirements: Three months full time (or equivalent) of basic book repair techniques or conservation treatments AND experience with an online library system. Conditions of Employment: Must successfully pass a criminal history background check. Note: The University of Colorado at Boulder is committed to providing a safe and productive learning and living community. Background investigations include a criminal history record check, and when appropriate, a financial and/or motor vehicle history. Highly Desirable Qualifications: Knowledge of and skill in some basic conservation treatments is required. Skills may have been acquired in workshops, advanced or specialized library or museum coursework, or hands-on work in a conservation operation in libraries and/or museums. Any training or experience should be the equivalent of three months experience in basic book repair techniques. Highly desirable skills include: training or experience using online databases for research; familiarity with book construction or actual experience in making books; familiarity with bindery software (such as LARS or ABLE); commitment to preservation or conservation work as a possible career. Substitution: Course work from an accredited college or university including three semester hours of library science course work in book repair, preservation, or museum course work in artifact preservation may substitute for the three months of basic book repair experience. Please Note: If education is used to meet the minimum requirements, you must submit a transcript copy by the closing date. Exam Schedule: Applicants will be notified of the time, date, place, and type of examination required.
