Job Description

Do you have the soul of a librarian, the heart of an activist, the mind of an educator, and the spine of a Navy SEAL? Do you want to work in a library where you make a meaningful contribution every day? Do you want to work in a community where over eighty percent of residents visit your library regularly? Do you want experience supervising other library staff? Do you want opportunities to use your skills and talents as a librarian creatively, ethically, and enthusiastically? Do you want a job that can launch or enhance a great career in librarianship? If you answered yes to any of these questions, a correctional library may be the place for you! The Colorado Department of Corrections has just announced one FTE Library Technician III position at the Fort Lyon Correctional Facility library. With guidance from a Regional Librarian, this position serves adult male offenders, many of whom have special needs related to age, physical or cognitive disabilities, or mental illness. The Library Technician III supervises one Library Technician II; these duties include performance planning, mentoring evaluating, and providing feedback. The Library Technician III assists in the daily operations of the correctional facility library by providing public/school-type (not law) library service. Duties include: providing reference and information services; providing readers’ advisory services; hiring, training, and supervising offender library assistants; performing library computer functions using the automated library management system (data entry, circulation, catalog maintenance, and running reports); preparing monthly reports; determining need for supplies, preparing requisitions, and placing orders; monitoring operating budget; selecting, reviewing, and supervising processing of new materials and donations; and managing the behavior of offender library patrons. In addition, the position works on more complex issues such as creating and revising procedures, solving problems affecting the operations of the unit, and working independently. Position may be responsible for developing and implementing library services tailored to a special needs offender population including geriatric offenders and offenders with disabilities.

Additional Info & Requirements

Four years of general library experience involving typing, ordering, preparing, shelving, and maintaining library materials including two years of technical library experience involving cataloging/classifying, providing reference and patron services, and creating/revising procedures.
