Job Description

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 1. Serves as “person in charge” in the absence of the Library Manager 2. Works on the public service desks providing reference service to walk-ins, over the phone, via email, and instant messaging; and provides circulation service 3. Assists and instructs patrons through material and on-line searches, computer software applications, reference/in-depth research, community referrals, and outside sources/collections 4. Provides in-depth assistance and information about the library’s services and procedures 5. Searches a variety of reference resources 6. Provides readers’ advisory services 7. Maintains confidentiality in all patron and staff interactions 8. Manages and assigns daily workflow, assigns bi-weekly work schedules (including scheduling substitutes when needed), and verifies and approves timesheets. Supervises, coaches, trains, and evaluates staff, substitutes, and volunteers; participates in the interviewing, selection and hiring process of staff; and may participate in terminations as required. Maintains personnel records; and authorizes employee reimbursements from petty cash. 9. Promotes library services through tours, demonstrations, talks, and displays 10. Uses computers, printers, TTD, fax, CD ROM and other business equipment as necessary 11. Assess patron needs and provides pertinent materials in an organized fashion (including bibliographies, fact sheets, pathfinders, etc.) 12. May teach computer classes for the public and PPLD staff 13. May direct merchandising activities (displays, bulletin boards, etc.) 14. Performs other related duties as assigned

Requires a minimum of 1 year of library or other public service work experience; Prefer candidates with proficiency using MS Office software applications REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / ABILITIES: 1. Knowledge of general library practices and procedures 2. Ability to promote library resources and programs 3. Ability to follow verbal/written instructions 4. Possess good verbal and written communication skills 5. Ability to use a personal computer and office equipment effectively, including Microsoft Office software applications 6. Ability to work independently without close supervision; and abilities to plan, organize, and execute job assignments 7. Ability to conduct effective patron interviews to determine user needs 8. Ability to instruct patrons in library resources 9. Ability to represent the library district with tact and courtesy 10. Ability to exhibit sound professional judgment and demeanor in all public interactions 11. Ability to think and act appropriately under pressure while serving on the public desk 12. Proficiency with computer applications and databases 13. Ability to work as an effective team member, have a "whatever it takes" work ethic, and have an excellent customer service attitude
