LITERARY ASSISTANT - Mac Savant - Far SW Portland Full candor. I need the person most creative, most convincing that I need him/her. Published writer/exhibited artist seeks person of exceptional temperament, confidence, articulate. Advanced MAC skills, inc. Time Machine, Leopard, who excels at advanced Word for MAC formatting and file organization. Tasks will include manuscript preparation, submission tracking, management of very large number of MS Word for MAC documents created in various formats. The ideal candidate will be someone with a degree from major university specializing in information science, or Comp. Lit. Required: you have written a thesis. You have a special area of expertise besides virtual and hard copy file management, excel, power point, esp. graphics, website maintenance, communications, press, PR. Anything else? Confidence, sense of humor invaluable. Cool multi-tasking professional focused under pressure of deadlines. Hobbies? Passions? •DOES THIS SOUND LIKE YOU? Work AND hours will vary with projects, deadlines, your skill set. The ideal candidate would be available for an extended period of time—nine months to a year preferably—due to complexity of multiple and overlaid projects in different dimensions, efficiency > continuity. •Proximity to intersection of HWY 217 and HWY 26 highly desirable. (You’d have less traffic to contend with, more freed-up time for yourself. ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL: • Radically MAC literate : Leopard, Microsoft Office 2004 and 2008, MobileMe, Pages ’09, Leopard / Time Machine, Excel. Power Point, bells & whistles. • Highly proficient with MS Word 2008 for Mac (Tiger as well as Leopard) • As used in creation of manuscripts. • Business/accounting skills helpful. SUMMARY • Know how to annotate, track changes, merge & compare, footnotes, Biblio, acknowledgements, notes, creating/updating table of contents, pagination, find, file & sort skills. Ability to troubleshoot computer networking issues. Excel at search strategies, data and doc management. Ability to locate “lost” documents through refined Finder searches or other means • Own your own Mac Laptop, useful for multi-tasking, occasional telecommuting. • Intuitive with Mac glitches, printer, copier, scanner gremlins; resolution/color. • Experienced, scholarly, focused with Bachelor’s degree. Master’s preferable. Ideal applicant would have completed an extensive research project, thesis or manuscript. Familiarity with a wide range of traditional and electronic resources. • Familiar with Apple Mail, networking multiple computers wirelessly. • Proven ability to design, manage and update organizational systems based on rotating needs • Literary, articulate, widely read. • Strong problem-solving abilities with a knack for finding creative solutions • Excellent verbal and written communication skills • Demonstrated ability to work independently on own initiative • TOTALLY HONEST, ETHICAL, RELIABLE, RESPONSIBLE • Car essential, excellent driving record • NON-SMOKER living in non-smoking environment. DESIRABLE • Knowledge /ownership of graphic software a strong plus. Photographic skills a strong plus. Graphic, website skills? Recording? Strong aesthetic. • Sense of humor invaluable. • Eagle-eyed proofreading skills (formatting, not editing). • Large vocabulary, excellent communication skills, passion for all disciplines, especially visual arts, theatre and music. • Experience with fellowship applications, grant writing desirable. • Weekend & Evening availability on occasion, especially in conjunction with deadlines. RESPONSIBILITIES: • Provide computer support. Locate files, assemble and format manuscripts • Research markets, provide guidelines, cover materials; track submissions • Maintain efficient and coherent organizational systems • Responsible for scheduling and phone calls REMAIN COOL UNDER PRESSURE OF DEADLINES ADDITIONALLY: Must be self-motivated; have impeccable personal and professional references. Perfect for a recent graduate, a prospective candidate for grad school a year off -- or someone with educational background who seriously wants time out from the work-environment and its dynamics. Ideal applicant takes pleasure in working both independently and in close collaborative conjunction on projects. Flexible hours does not mean structured, regular … but could mean expandable for right fit. I’m seeking someone whose commitments (classes? family? part-time work elsewhere) can accommodate exigencies, deadlines. The unexpected is to be expected. There’s variety in this position if you’re gifted at multi-tasking, a life-long learner impassioned by the arts. Commitment and regard for continuity in this position crucial. To reiterate, however: hours can be unpredictable and irregular. A private home, not an office.
