Job Description

Information Scientist I - Research Librarian Job Summary: This position supports the NREL Library’s document delivery, research and reference, and outreach services to NREL staff and visitors. The position has a significant public service aspect, including communication with clients to: identify information required to support Laboratory programs; provide information on the status of document delivery and research requests; and provide general and subject-specific instruction and information on Library resources and services to remote and walk-in clients. Job Duties: Professionally and proactively support the NREL Library’s mission and operations: • As a member of the Document Delivery group: o Verify, acquire, copy/scan, deliver, and track publications and other materials requested by NREL research, analysis and administrative staff. o Use various library catalogs, commercial databases, websites and other information sources to verify and fill requests. o Manage requests using several technical systems (ILLiad, Ariel, OCLC, and SirsiDynix Horizon). o Support routine maintenance of document delivery systems. • As a member of the Reference group: o Provide library reference/research services to NREL staff using library collections, internet resources, S&T databases, and other internal and external resources; analyze and format research results based on client requirements. o Staff information desk: provide general and subject-specific information and instruction on use of library collections, databases, bibliographic tools (e.g. EndNote), and other applications (e.g. e-book collections). o Identify new library resources and services that meet the needs of NREL clients. o Assist with content development and maintenance of the library website. o Identify and implement new technologies relevant to library services. o Participate on Lab-wide projects and task teams; cultivate partnerships with NREL clients. o Participate in professional library and other organizations related to job responsibilities. • In support of Training/Outreach/Communications: o Plan and organize training and special programs that cover the use of library resources, services, and emerging technologies. o Prepare training materials (e.g. PowerPoint presentations, online tutorials etc.). o Prepare communications on Library activities for in-house publications, web-sites, or other distribution media. • Work on other projects as assigned.

Additional Info & Requirements

Required Education and Experience: Relevant Bachelor's Degree or equivalent relevant education/experience. Additional Basic Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities • Experience in use of OCLC and ILLiad systems. • Familiarity with S&T information resources and databases (e.g. IEEE, SciFinder, Web of Science etc.) • Experience in training and presentations. • Excellent interpersonal and teaming skills. • Excellent oral and written communications skills. • Excellent analytical and problem solving skills. • Strong customer service orientation – deals with all levels of employees (from Executive to individual contributors) as well as visitors. • Good organizational and time management skills • Proficient in computer skills including MS Office (Outlook, Work, Excel, PowerPoint). • Familiarity with general web design, taxonomy, Web 2.0. • Interest in, and understanding of, emerging technologies related to Library resources and services. Preferred Qualifications • MA in Library and Information Science, or related field. • Experience in a science, technical, or university library.
