The Colorado Department of Corrections has just announced one FTE Library Technician III position at the Fort Lyon Correctional Facility library. With guidance from a Regional Librarian, this position serves adult male offenders, many of whom have special needs related to age, physical or cognitive disabilities, or mental illness. The Library Technician III supervises one Library Technician II; these duties include performance planning, mentoring evaluating, and providing feedback. The Library Technician III assists in the daily operations of the correctional facility library by providing public/school-type (not law) library service. Duties include: providing reference and information services; providing readers’ advisory services; hiring, training, and supervising offender library assistants; performing library computer functions using the automated library management system (data entry, circulation, catalog maintenance, and running reports); preparing monthly reports; determining need for supplies, preparing requisitions, and placing orders; monitoring operating budget; selecting, reviewing, and supervising processing of new materials and donations; and managing the behavior of offender library patrons. In addition, the position works on more complex issues such as creating and revising procedures, solving problems affecting the operations of the unit, and working independently. Position may be responsible for developing and implementing library services tailored to a special needs offender population including geriatric offenders and offenders with disabilities. The Library Technician III position requires no previous knowledge of corrections. Training in security procedures is provided.Four years of general library experience involving typing, ordering, preparing, shelving, and maintaining library materials including two years of technical library experience involving cataloging/classifying, providing reference and patron services, and creating/revising procedures. Experience must be described in detail on your application to receive credit. SUBSTITUTIONS: Two years of coursework from an accredited college or university, including twelve semester hours of library science coursework, may substitute for two years of the general library experience. Combined with the coursework substitution, the Library Technician III position requires at least two years of experience.
