Job Description

BASIC JOB FUNCTION: The Metadata and Catalog Services Librarian will participate in IIS projects to increase access to resources by creating, enhancing, or ensuring the accuracy of metadata, establishing or ensuring consistency in the application of best practices, maintaining appropriate vocabularies for collection and resource descriptions, and ensuring the efficiency of cataloging workflows. This position will support cataloging activities for both digital and physical objects for a variety of IIS collections. DUTIES INCLUDE: Catalogs physical and digital resources by creating and editing metadata records in specified metadata frameworks, following best practices and established national and local standards for cataloging in prescribed formats, coordinating efforts with IIS staff who maintain various IIS collections, such as OpenSky, the NCAR Library institutional repository, OpenCat, the Library’s Integrated Library System, and other collections curated by IIS. Evaluates digital resources with respect to scientific and/or educational content, grade level appropriateness, resource type and other descriptive metadata fields. Provides quality control/assurance services to ensure integrity of metadata records contributed by other IIS catalogers. Edits records using web-based management tools, as well as XML, when necessary. Follows up on link-checking, provides critical review of community suggestion pages, and periodically implements the accessioning tool. Provides authority control for vocabularies in use in IIS collections. Ensures integrity in practice in use and maintenance, including the addition, referencing, and superceding of vocabulary terms. Serves as a member of the IIS metadata frameworks team, contributing to the establishment of and review of frameworks, vocabularies, authority controls, best practices, and cataloging workflow analysis. Supervisory responsibilities: May be asked to supervise cataloging team members through specific projects.

* Advanced knowledge of professional standards for management and descriptive information in libraries, including MARC, AACR2, LCSH. * Demonstrated knowledge of current library technologies, standards, and best practices, including metadata practices and associated technologies. * Working knowledge of a variety of metadata standards (e.g., Dublin Core, FDGC, IMS, METS/MODS, and protocols for expressing and sharing metadata such as XML, SGML RSS and OAI). * Knowledge of HTML, XML schemas and DTD’s, XML documents, RDF schemas and XSLT transformations. * Working knowledge of the principles of authority control and database maintenance in general. * Skill in organizing, prioritizing, strategizing, and carrying out multiple priorities and projects. * Excellent oral and written communication skills: excellent writing, editing, and proofing skills. * Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team environment. * Demonstrated knowledge of the life cycle management of digital assets, OCR and file formats for digitized materials. * Proficiency with office applications such as word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, database, etc.

Integrated Information Services (IIS) supports UCAR efforts to manage, preserve, and provide access to its scholarship and other intellectual assets for the broad research and education community and to support the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) community to effectively manage, disseminate, and utilize digital resources. IIS integrates library and information research, development, and operations of the NCAR Library and Digital Learning Sciences (DLS) in the UCAR Community Programs. IIS spans both NCAR and UCP in a single organizational and administrative structure. IIS staff work on a variety of programs and projects across NCAR and UCP that are managed in IIS. IIS programs and projects involve multi-institutional collaborations.
