Job Description
Location: Western History & Genealogy, Central Library, 13th & Broadway Status/Schedule: Regular, part-time, 30 hours per week. The schedule will be determined by the needs of the department and will include evening and weekend hours. Duties and Responsibilities: Creates positive experiences for library customers by performing professional library work including reference service and archival processing. Uses electronic resources and an extensive collection to answer reference questions and locate materials for customers. Provides online reference service. Staffs a busy reference desk, serving a diverse clientele of all ages. Promotes community outreach and programming. Communicates effectively about issues and initiatives with customers, coworkers, and administration. Assists in the development and maintenance of a special library collection requiring specialized handling, security, and subject expertise. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of the history of the American West with emphasis on Denver and Colorado. Knowledge of Western History and Genealogy. Knowledge of reference services. Knowledge of print and electronic information retrieval. Skill in operating a computer and organizing information. Skill in presenting information, both orally and in writing, especially for training library customers in the use of electronic resources. Ability to research and answer written reference questions. Ability to thrive working in an environment with constant public contact with people from all backgrounds and age groups. Ability to demonstrate positive attitude, excellent interpersonal skills, cultural sensitivity, and a sense of humor in working with customers, coworkers, and community. Ability to perform community outreach and programming. Ability to creatively problem-solve, negotiate, and handle stressful situations in a positive manner. Ability to demonstrate innovation and flexibility. Experience: Experience in providing high volume, innovative library service preferred.
