Job Description

The University of Colorado at Boulder Libraries invites applications from motivated and innovative librarians to provide expertise in metadata provision. As the largest research library in the Rocky Mountain region, the University Libraries is committed to providing access to all types of materials in conformance with national standards and to advancing the field of librarianship through active service, inquiry, and participation in cooperative programs. Reporting to the Faculty Director of Cataloging and Metadata Services, the Metadata Librarian is responsible for metadata creation and analysis of digital resources within the Libraries and/or for the campus community. The position may play a significant consultative role for metadata provision for the campus community. In furtherance of the Libraries’ mission and departmental goals, the individual in this position may teach others in the library about metadata provision and provide metadata support to the campus community. The Metadata Librarian is a member of the tenure-stream Libraries faculty. Significant parts of the responsibilities of this position are scholarly activity and creative work and service in keeping with the tenure standards of the University of Colorado at Boulder. Appointment and Salary The successful candidate will be appointed as a full-time (12 month) tenure-stream faculty member. Depending upon demonstrated accomplishments in scholarly activity, creative work, and service, appointment will be at the senior instructor, assistant professor, or associate professor level. Minimum starting salary: $48,888. Benefits include 22 working days of vacation, ten paid holidays, liberal sick leave, university group health care plans, group life insurance, TIAA/CREF or other retirement/annuity, and support for scholarly/professional activities. Tenured librarians are eligible for sabbatical leave.

Requirements • Master's degree from an ALA-accredited library school prior to the date of appointment • Demonstrated knowledge of cataloging and metadata provision • Knowledge of MARC and non-MARC metadata schema • Familiarity with XML and XSLT • Effective oral and written communication skills • Potential for scholarly activity and creative work and professional service Desirable Qualifications Evidence of any of the following will enhance a candidacy: • Experience with a variety of non-MARC metadata schema, standards, best practices and their application (e.g., DC, MODS, DACS, VRA, PBcore, EAD, Geospatial metadata, DDI, METS, MIX, OAI-PMH) • Engagement in national/international standards and professional organizations related to metadata • Knowledge of and interest in current issues, trends, and emerging standards in cataloging and metadata • Familiarity with one scripting (e.g., PERL) or similar programming languages • Strong interpersonal skills with agility to work across different cultures • Vision regarding ontologies • Potential for leadership • Experience working in a collaborative environment • Experience working with disciplines other than librarianship on metadata best practices • Demonstrated initiative in investigating new ideas and implementing change • Experience using technology to facilitate innovative ways to provide access to library collections • Evidence of achievement in research and creative work and professional service
