Job Description

The University of Colorado Boulder seeks an experienced librarian in Chinese Studies to provide library services in support of expanding Asian Studies programs. This is a tenure-stream faculty position reporting to the Faculty Director for Collection Development. This position serves as the subject selector and liaison primarily for Chinese studies and also for other specified areas of Asian studies, excluding Japanese and Korean studies. Duties include collection development, classroom instruction in Chinese research methodologies, and specialized reference/consultation services. The successful candidate is a key contact for the Asian Languages and Civilizations Department and the Center for Asian Studies (CAS). This position participates in collaborative projects with the East Asian Studies Research and Instruction Librarian and works closely with staff from various library units to acquire and provide access to materials in the vernacular. As a member of the Libraries’ Collection Development Department, this position actively participates in a wide range of collection assessment and management activities. Significant parts of the responsibilities of this position are research and creative work and service in keeping with the tenure standards of the University of Colorado at Boulder. Appointment and Salary The successful candidate will be appointed as a full-time (12 month) tenure-stream faculty member. Depending upon demonstrated accomplishments in scholarly activity, creative work, and service, appointment will be at the senior instructor, assistant professor, or associate professor level. Benefits include 22 working days of vacation, ten paid holidays, liberal sick leave, university group health care plans, group life insurance, TIAA/CREF or other retirement/annuity, and support for scholarly/professional activities. Tenured librarians are eligible for sabbatical leave.

Requirements • Master’s degree in Library and/or Information Science from an ALA-accredited program • Superior Chinese language skills as well as excellent spoken and written English • Two years of professional experience in an academic library including, but not limited to, collection development, reference, and instruction • Strong academic background in Chinese studies • Strong interpersonal skills • Demonstrated potential for research, scholarly, and/or professional achievement at a national level Desirable Qualifications: • Master’s degree in Chinese Studies • Significant experience with developing and managing traditional and digital collections in the vernacular and with teaching research methodologies in Chinese studies • Experience with collection development in other Asian languages/Asian studies areas
