Job Description

The University of Colorado at Boulder Libraries invites applications from creative librarians to apply for the position of Special Collections Instruction Librarian. As the largest research library in the Rocky Mountain region, the University Libraries is committed to providing instruction to the CU campus and the Front Range higher education community. Promoting use of and access to rare materials and primary source material in support of teaching and research to the campus and broader public is a significant goal of the Libraries. Special subject collections include, but are not limited to, mountaineering (18th century to the present travel and exploration), 19th through 21st century photobooks, and the history of science. The Special Collections Instruction Librarian participates as a member of the department in designing and implementing instruction and outreach programs, providing traditional and virtual reference services, developing online exhibits, facilitating donor relations, and engaging in special projects with campus cultural resources (e.g., CU Museum of Natural History, Heritage Center, National Snow and Ice Data Center, and CU Art Museum colleagues). This position will manage and develop literary manuscript collections, including those containing electronic formats. Creating Encoded Archival Description (EAD) guides is essential. Other responsibilities include working with the Faculty Director of Special Collections in collection development activities. The Special Collections Department serves the students and faculty of the University of Colorado at Boulder and the State of Colorado at large. Instruction and outreach services include work with audiences as diverse as fourth graders to senior citizens. Future instruction and outreach activities may be planned for Spanish-speaking constituencies on campus as opportunities become available. This is a tenure-track faculty position reporting to the Faculty Director of Special Collections. Significant parts of the responsibilities of this position are research and creative work and service in keeping with the tenure standards of the University of Colorado at Boulder. Appointment The successful candidate will be appointed as a full-time (12 month) tenure-stream faculty member. Depending upon demonstrated accomplishments in scholarly activity, creative work, and service, appointment will be at the senior instructor, assistant professor, or associate professor level. Minimum starting salary is $48,888. Benefits include 22 working days of vacation, ten paid holidays, liberal sick leave, university group health care plans, group life insurance, TIAA/CREF or other retirement/annuity, and support for scholarly/professional activities. Tenured librarians are eligible for sabbatical leave.

Requirements • Master's degree from an ALA-accredited library school by the time of hire • Experience in public school teaching and/or instructional services to undergraduates or graduate students • Experience in arranging and describing manuscript collections and creating EAD guides • Experience in providing reference services in an academic/research library • Experience with emerging and established technologies in academic libraries, including web site design, social networking, and web 2.0 tools • Initiative, creativity, and ability to work effectively in a rapidly changing service environment • Effective oral and written communication skills • Strong interpersonal skills • Ability to represent the University of Colorado to a variety of groups and forums • Demonstrated potential for research, scholarly, and/or professional achievement at the national level Desirable Qualifications • Advanced academic degree or certification in rare books and special collections librarianship, history, the humanities, or a related field, with an emphasis on the history of science and/or photography • Experience in a rare book, special collections, archive, or museum environment • Technological expertise related to trends in special collections librarianship services, digital collections, and the archiving and preservation of manuscript collections that contain electronic formats • Knowledge of copyright for online instruction or exhibits • Fluency in Spanish (German, Italian, or French also acceptable) • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with faculty, students, and staff in a multicultural environment
