Job Description

OVERALL JOB OBJECTIVE Under general direction in a leadership role, this position develops and maintains the Boulder Public Library website and related digital services. This includes working directly with the Library Applications & System Support Manager, the Systems Librarian, and Library staff on the integration of library digital resources into a coherent, organized presentation, with an emphasis on accessibility and ease-of-use, demonstrating innovative style techniques, coupled with ease of maintenance. This position works in coordination with the City's Technology Webmaster and the City's Communication Manager or designee with regard to Web services and social media applications. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Designs, develops, and maintains the suite of Boulder Public Library websites, including the staff intraweb, and other Web-related applications, including but not limited to: events calendar, meeting room reservation system, and a variety of social media applications. Establishes overall navigational layout and structure, as well as individual design and graphic elements. This includes, but is not limited to open source content management software, development software, design and content tools, Web servers, reporting tools, and design guidelines. 2. Provides leadership and acts as the project manager and/or team member on a variety of Web-related projects for the Library. Develops project work plans and project objective documents. Conducts meetings, coordinates and schedules work on assigned projects, tracks project progress and task assignments, and manages change control. Matrix-manages work efforts related to the completion of tasks and assignment of other staff assigned to a project. Manages the work of interns, consultants or contractors that may be used. Provides regular written and verbal communication on project status via reports, regular status meetings with team members, and advisory committee meetings with division managers and the senior management team. 3. Provides support and training to staff on the use of Web technology, the Content Management System (CMS) and writing for the Web to maintain a high level of customer service for library patrons. Under the guidance of the library leadership, establishes and documents standards for content submission. Assists the Systems Librarian on seamless integration and functionality of the Library Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC). 4. Coordinates with the City's Technology Webmaster to ensure Library websites adhere to City Web architecture and infrastructure standards. As a lead manager, coordinates with City's Communication Manager or designee to establish workflow, provide oversight, and set standards for the staff that create content for the digital sign system, social media applications, and the events calendar. Coordinates with the City's Social Media Team to ensure Library social media websites adhere to City social media policies and standards. Serves on the City's Web Manager Group and Social Media Team. 5. Performs daily, weekly, and other regularly scheduled update functions to the Library website and related digital services. Analyzes website use, and identifies and creates relevant statistical reports for library administration upon request. Develops and employs goals, data-filters and advanced reports in Google Analytics to assess usage patterns and the effectiveness of Web services. In coordination with the public services staff, monitors customer feedback e-mail and replies to patron comments and questions regarding the Library website and digital services. 6. Other: • Performs related duties as required to meet the needs of the City and the Library. • Takes proper safety precautions to prevent accidents. Is responsible for the safety of self, others, materials, and equipment. Uses all required safety equipment, and follows all safety regulations, policies and procedures. Reports all accidents and damage to City property. • Responsible for knowing and complying with all City and department policies; participating in professional trainings and development; and adhering to attendance and workplace attire policies. Sufficient personal mobility and physical reflexes, which permits the employee to work in an office setting. Work may include extended periods of time viewing a computer video monitor and/ or operating a keyboard. Ability to work under stress from demanding deadlines, public contact, and changing priorities and conditions. Work Environment: Works primarily in a clean, comfortable environment. Works in a setting subject to continuous interruptions and background noises. Machines and equipment used include, but are not limited to the following: Frequently uses standard office equipment including personal computers, telephones, calculators and copy/fax machines. Demonstrated expertise in web development using content management systems, such as Drupal and Joomla!. Experience with Perl, PHP, XHTML, CSS, JavaScript, Dreamweaver, Photoshop, Fireworks, and Illustrator. Knowledge of design concepts (user experience design, layout, style and color management, brand management, etc.). Knowledge of XML, XSLT, MySQL, Google Analytics and VMware. Ability to work under minimal supervision. Courteous and effective communications and customer service skills, and proven ability to work in a team environment. Ability to independently manage and prioritize competing requests. Familiarity with the concept of User Experience. Must be a resourceful problem-solver and provide timely follow-through on user request for assistance and guidance, and have experience collaborating with all levels of staff possessing varied technical skills. Valid driver's license. Have and maintain acceptable background information, including criminal conviction history, motor vehicle record and credit history. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS – In addition to the required minimum qualifications: Master of Library and Information Science degree; previous work in an academic or public library; progressive leadership responsibility in project management and staff training; graphic design training or experience; knowledge of Innovative Interfaces, Inc. Integrated Library System (specifically experience working with the OPAC preferred) and MARC,; Evanced; web survey tools; and LibraryThing for Libraries; knowledge of Linux environment and OS scripting, and Apache Web Server; .net, and an ability to communicate in at least one language other than English.
