Job Description

Works under the supervision of the Youth Services Supervisor in a team environment. Maintains a positive public service orientation. Shows understanding and empathy for children and teens. Ability to set appropriate boundaries with customers. Performs activities requiring good judgment and initiative in developing and providing services to teens. Provides leadership in the planning and implementation of the district-wide summer reading program and other programs for children and teens. Develops and coordinates the Teen Advisory Committee which provides feedback from teens regarding programs and services. Provides readers advisory and research assistance to customers using all resources available to the library as well as outside resources to teens, parents, teachers and community members. Creates bibliographies for public distribution. Assists and instructs customers in use of computer catalog, personal computers, electronic databases, Internet and other equipment. Explains library policies and procedures, and resolves basic complaints. Arranges programs for the public and schools which promote the use of library materials and services. Assists in the collection development process of evaluating and weeding materials. Maintains program budgets information and general statistics regarding customer usage. Plans and performs story times and/or programs for children and teens. Creates and performs book talks. Promotes teen services to the community by working with the Community Relations department, outside organizations and schools. Provides training to staff and volunteers. Gives tours, visits schools, and provides community outreach. Occasionally may be assigned to the role of Supervisor in Charge for the Rawlings Library including oversight of safety, building security and of the security guard on duty. Occasionally may be assigned the role of Substitute Youth Services Supervisor including oversight of the Youth Services Department in the absence of the Youth Services Supervisor. Prepares reports regarding programs, maintains ordering and budgeting information for the collection, and purchasing of materials for programs as needed. May supervise and coordinate work for special projects as assigned by the supervisor. Performs other duties as assigned.

Additional Info & Requirements

Primary duties require thorough knowledge of young adult literature and of print and electronic reference tools and knowledge of research techniques. Excellent communication skills are required including the ability to engage children and teens listen and resolve problems. Able to lead groups and communicate effectively to a variety of audiences and age levels. An intermediate level of technology skills are required including use of the internet, Outlook, Word, library catalog, databases, Sirsi, downloadable materials, e-readers and other digital technologies. Must pass a criminal background check, possess a clean driving record, current Colorado Driver's License and provide proof of automobile insurance.
