Job Description

Our successful candidate is a person who can skillfully and enthusiastically create and present programming for youth of all ages, and who demonstrates a strong commitment to working with children as well as their parents and caregivers. The Youth Services Librarian is part of a branch service team that shares responsibility for circulation, readers’ advisory and reference service to customers of all ages. Duties of the position include but are not limited to: • planning and presenting programs for children and teens at the Alford Regional and Linwood branches; • leading group tours and developing special activities for school classes and organizations; • promoting Library materials and services through displays and exhibits; • managing the branch teen volunteer program; • maintaining the branch children’s collections; • partnering with peers throughout the Library system to develop a master schedule of programs and events; • assisting with circulation and reference desk service to customers of all ages; • assisting customers with use of the Library’s public computing and electronic resources; and • participating on Library teams and with system special projects.

Additional Info & Requirements

Position requirements include: MLS degree from an ALA accredited institution or an equivalent combination of education and experience; outstanding communication skills, a strong customer service commitment; knowledge of children’s literature and principles of child development; and competency with technologies including personal computer applications and integrated library systems. Evening and weekend shifts in rotation with other public service staff are expected. Residency within thirty minutes lawful driving time of the corporate limits of the City of Wichita will be required of the successful applicant.
