Job Description

Duties and Responsibilities: Acts as DPL’s primary liaison to the library’s contracted collection agency and assists customers referred for collection action in identifying options to resolve delinquent accounts. Responds to customer voicemail, email and postal correspondence quickly and professionally. Understands supports and communicates library policies clearly and consistently. Provides information and training regarding collection accounts to staff system-wide through formal and informal instruction. Works in the Central Library Books & Borrowing Department’s circulation unit providing direct customer service. Creates positive experiences for library customers by checking out and returning books and other library materials, registering customers for library cards, placing holds and ordering books and other library materials from other agencies, correcting database holdings and responding to customer questions and issues about circulation matters. Assists with the direction, training and supervision of clerical staff. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of office practices and procedures. Skill in providing leadership. Skill in interpreting, communicating and presenting information. Skill in handling difficult customer interactions calmly and objectively. Skill in operating a computer and working with attention to detail. Ability to create and maintain positive staff relationships. Ability to thrive working in an environment with constant public contact with people from all backgrounds and age groups. Ability to demonstrate positive attitude, excellent interpersonal skills, cultural sensitivity, and a sense of humor in working with customers, coworkers, and community. Ability to help select, train, motivate and lead clerical staff. Ability to creatively problem solve, negotiate and handle stressful situations in a positive manner. Ability to multi-task and prioritize. Ability to demonstrate a high level of empathy. Ability to read and comprehend statistical reports. Ability to make simple mathematical computations. Experience: One year of experience in library circulation or a collection agency-related field, including experience providing customer service and resolving customer issues. Proven initiative in prior positions is a must. Special Requirements: A background and credit check must be passed after the offer to hire has been made. Education: High school graduate or equivalent.
