Job Description

Major Duties and Responsibilities: A. Work with the CDE leadership and staff, institutions of higher education, Colorado Association of Libraries, and other state and national organizations to promote and improve services to children as well as promote funding for literacy initiatives which develop a life-long love of reading and stories. B. Consult with the Colorado public libraries to support development of services for youth and families including programs for babies and toddlers, summer reading programs, after school activities for school age children and teenagers, homework help, gaming, and innovative technology initiatives, and other transformational programs for youth and families. C. Advocate for youth and family services through formal and informal communications, online presence, data collection and dissemination, and other research activities which demonstrate the value of public library services for youth. D. Facilitate multi-type library cooperation including partnerships between public libraries and school districts in support of Colorado Academic Standards and student academic achievement. E. Coordinate and promote early literacy initiatives in Colorado public libraries that support early childhood brain development and pre-literacy skills development including work with the Colorado Libraries for Early Literacy committee. F. Oversee Colorado literacy initiatives such as summer reading programs including coordinating promotional materials, sponsors, budgets, and statewide cooperation to insure excellence and student participation that maintains reading levels throughout the summer. G. Coordinate and provide professional development activities to Colorado library staff on child development, youth services collections and programs, and other aspects of services to children birth through age 18 and their families. H. Identify and develop partnerships, sponsorship, and grants for regional and statewide youth and family programs, materials, and initiatives that promote literacy and reading. I. Other duties as assigned.

Come work with us.Minimum Qualifications: •Experience with youth services in a public library including programming, reader’s advisory, and collection development. •Demonstrated knowledge of child developmental stages including early childhood and adolescent development. •Demonstrated knowledge of children’s literature. •Experience with successful training and presenting to library staff. •Demonstrated success with developing partnerships, acquiring sponsorships, and/or grant writing for youth and family initiatives. Preferred: •Knowledge of literacy and reading instruction and learning. •Experience with partnering including schools. •Member of state or national youth services organization. •Experience with library outreach to youth. •Experience with parent presentations related to literacy. •Proficiency with technology including web development, social media, online publications.
