Job Description

Performs work that involves the processing, handling and shelving of library materials in an accurate and timely manner. Maintains the general order of library materials and performs other circulation functions and basic clerical activities in support of library services. Creates positive experiences for library patrons by sorting, moving and retrieving library materials according to the library’s software classification system, so that patrons are provided with materials in a timely manner. Accurately shelves and maintains all library materials in accordance with published Department & District circulation procedures. Stays aware of new materials handling and circulation practices and guidelines. Moves, distributes and processes incoming and outgoing materials manually and using automated material handling equipment through the library’s software classification system, in a high volume environment. Operates and monitors all functions of the automated handling equipment or other related material handling tools, including PCs, printers, barcode scanners, and Smart bins. Stays current of branch and district updates by reading e-mails, meeting minutes or designated message board and by attending department and branch meetings as assigned. Must have the ability to present a positive image of the library in attitude, communications and appearance while performing duties in both the public and staff areas. Consistently shows a professional, courteous and helpful attitude towards all patrons, in a variety of patron service situations. Addresses patron questions as appropriate within training guidelines, and maintains patron privacy. Must consistently practice the “patron comes first” philosophy. Demonstrates a professional, positive, cooperative, team-oriented working relationship with staff, co-workers, and volunteers. Promotes DCL’s culture of safety by following library safety policy guidelines and safety rules. Practices effective personal and branch safety. Performs other work duties as assigned.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:Work is generally performed in a library environment, on multiple workstations, tasks, software programs and projects. Work requires continual physical activities, including constant material handling, standing, walking, close visual work, and computer use; with continual proximity to automated handling equipment, regular exposure to moderate noise levels, moderate exposure to residual dirt, dust, and occasional exposure to chemicals, mold or other foreign substances. Work involves some interaction with customers and staff, limited exposure to behavior issues and may require limited travel. Requires varied work hours, including weekends and evenings, which may change periodically.Must be able to learn circulation system functions and procedures including processing library materials manually, with automated handling equipment or with other related mechanical handling tools. Must be able to learn and become proficient with shelving the library’s classification system and collection layout. Must be able to accurately and efficiently file alphabetically, alpha-numerically and numerically. Must have the ability to work as an effective team member and work independently to complete work assignments as assigned. Must be able to provide efficient and courteous patron service towards a diverse patron population. Must have good oral and written communication skills. Must read, speak, write and understand the English language. Computer Skills: Keyboard skills required at an equivalent of typing 25 words per minute with minimal errors. Must be able to demonstrate a working knowledge of computer use including internet, email, Microsoft Office Products (or equivalent). Must be able to learn and become proficient with equipment and software programs as required to effectively and efficiently perform assigned duties. Physical Abilities: Must have the ability to stand, walk, bend to floor level and reach a height over 70 inches, repetitively on a rotating basis for extended periods. Must be able to handle materials, push/pull loaded carts or bins with a force of up to 35 pounds, carry 15 pounds, lift up to 35 pounds, and grip up to 15 pounds, repetitively. Must be able to kneel, squat and climb on a regular basis. Must be able to read minimum font size of 8 point. On a limited basis, must be able to tolerate residual smoke, dust and mold on materials
