Job Description

Demonstrates professional library science knowledge, public reference service skills, and an understanding of public library operations. Supports “patron first” practices. Effectively assists patrons of all ages by providing professional library reference services. Assists patrons in using special reference tools, conducting in-depth searches, preparing bibliographies, and locating materials. Utilizes knowledge of library collection and reference sources. Demonstrates command of numerous subject areas to assist patrons and staff with their inquiries. Demonstrates ability to conduct successful reference interviews to determine specific informational requirements of patrons. Skilled in interpersonal communications and in the ability to understand, interpret, and paraphrase patron questions in order to negotiate successful outcomes. Successfully represents the library with tact and courtesy, showing the ability to think and act appropriately under pressure. Exhibits sound professional judgment and demeanor in all public and staff transactions. Can instruct patrons in the use of print sources and electronic bibliographic reference tools. Demonstrates advanced reference and search skills in the use of computer searching techniques. Demonstrates interest and actively seeks knowledge relating to current public library services trends. Demonstrates interest in current events and social issues. Supports branch health and safety practices throughout the library. All work items described here may be performed in a virtual/call center environment. Uses discretion in addressing problem situations or conflicts at the appropriate level. Does not avoid problematic situations. Provides readers' advisory service to patrons. May perform light circulation desk duties in the course of serving reference and other patrons. Creates positive experiences for library patrons by effectively and efficiently performing job tasks; presents a positive image of the library in attitude, communications and appearance while performing duties in both the public and staff areas. Demonstrates a professional, positive, cooperative, team-oriented working relationship with staff, co-workers, and volunteers. Stays current on DCL policies, processes, procedures and technologies required to perform work duties. Promotes DCL’s culture of safety by following library safety policy guidelines and safety rules. Practices effective personal and branch safety. Performs other work duties as assigned. Performs a variety of professional duties related to reference, adult and youth services for library patrons. Works as a substitute librarian for the entire district. Responds quickly to last-minute staffing requests, and is willing to work as a fill-in substitute at any district location at a moment's notice. Implements library services , providing complex professional and technical library services to the community. Youth services and children's story time experience is strongly preferred

WORK ENVIRONMENT:Work is generally performed in a library and office environment, on multiple workstations, tasks, software programs and projects. Work requires frequent physical activity, close visual work, and computer use; with regular proximity to automated handling equipment, limited exposure to moderate noise levels, residual dirt, dust, and occasional exposure to chemicals, mold or foreign substances. Work involves extensive interaction with customers and staff, moderate exposure to behavior issues, and may require moderate travel. Requires varied work hours, including weekends and evenings, which may change periodically. Working knowledge of the professional principles of reference services to include reference tools and methodologies, including e-media, print and electronic sources. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Must be able to work independently and to demonstrate a positive attitude toward staff and patrons of all ages whether in person or on the telephone. Daily contact is with patrons, staff, and other library systems. Frequent contact is made with other adult reference and youth department employees, the Department Heads, Branch Managers and volunteers. Must be able to maintain a positive professional image in representing reference services and the Library District. Errors in work could cause dissemination of inaccurate or incomplete information and dissatisfied patrons and/or staff. Work is characterized by somewhat difficult decisions in determining course of action to be taken with patron reference questions. Must be capable of using alternative reference methods to address patrons' problems and questions, especially in areas where guidelines are deficient or do not exist. Work is performed under periods of occasional stress resulting from peak periods of patron service requests. Must have the ability to learn and become proficient in functions required to perform job duties, working effectively independently or as part of a team to complete tasks as assigned. Must communicate effectively using English. Must read and write English at a level appropriate to the position. Computer Skills: Must demonstrate competency in computer use including internet, email, Microsoft Office Products (or equivalent). Keyboard skills required at an equivalent of typing 35 words per minute with minimal errors. Must be able to learn and become proficient with equipment and software programs as required to effectively and efficiently perform assigned duties. Physical Abilities: Must have the physical ability, stamina, mobility and manual dexterity to: Stand, walk, bend to floor level, reach to a height over 70 inches, read a minimum 8 point font, and work at computer workstations, frequently. Handle materials, push/pull carts/bins with a force of up to 35 pounds, carry 15 pounds, lift up to 35 pounds, grip up to 15 pounds, kneel, squat and climb, on a regular basis. On a limited basis, tolerate residual smoke, dust, mold or foreign substances on materials. Story time experience and Youth Librarian experience is strongly preferred. Top applicants must be able to respond to last-minute staffing requests. Schedule flexibility to respond to last-minute staffing needs is required.
