Job Description

POSITION TITLE: Manager of Library Services DEPARTMENT: Library at Emily Griffith High School/Emily Griffith Technical College WORK YEAR: 235 days Objective: This position manages the library at Emily Griffith. This is a two-person department, servicing both the technical college and the reporting to the Executive Director of Emily Griffith Technical College and the Principal of Emily Griffith High School. Essential Functions: • Evaluates the current design, organization and resources in an existing library and makes recommendations for redesign to the principal and executive director. • Coordinates the conversion of the current library to one that meets the needs of the students, the school and its unique curriculum. • Oversees and manages a small reading library, computer research center and student study center. • Facilitates the effective utilization of the District's library automation system, LION, as well as other library information technologies such as subscription databases and video streaming. • Learns to use new educational software and assists teachers and students in the use of computer equipment, software, online databases, and Internet; including research technology tools for the classroom. • Assists teachers with classes, but is NOT responsible for developing and teaching information literacy lessons. (Teachers stay with students when full class is in library.) • Assists teachers in teaching students to use library systems. • Provides staff development on library and computer systems on an individual basis. • Assists students doing independent research and provides readers' advisory assistance. • Teaches students to use library systems on an individual or small group basis. • Uses the Dewey Decimal System to locate and shelve books. • Maintains order and functionality of the school library media materials and equipment. • Uses the library automation system appropriately to circulate materials, manage student checkout and provide notification of over dues, assist in locating materials for students and teachers. • Maintains consideration files and coordinates the physical ordering of new materials with the assistance of Library Services Collection Development Specialists. • Adds holdings and processes books as needed through the automated library system. • Handles interlibrary loans and student requests. • Assists principal with collection development through: collection assessment, weeding, and inventory. Develops collection map and does inventory. Seeks assistance from ERS on weeding the collections. • Creates and maintains a comfortable, barrier-free, safe and efficient working space for all library users. • Assists with managing the library budget. • Assists in managing student use of the library and supervises students in the library media center when they come for checkout or library skills class with their teacher. • At times is responsible for supervision and discipline of small groups of high school or adult students when no professional is immediately present. • Performs other tasks appropriate to the daily operation of the school's library media center. Education/Experience: • College degree in humanities, science/technology or equivalent combination of education and experience required. • Library experience preferred. • Able to meet federally mandated highly qualified requirements. • Strong technical skills/computer literacy. Training, Licensure & Certification: • Mandatory Library Services training must be completed. • New Librarians Institute at the beginning of the school year and additional mandatory training during the year.
