Job Description

This position works under the supervision of the Youth Services Supervising Librarian in a team environment. It involves extensive interactions with customers, outside agencies, co-workers and educational resources. The work requires the ability to engage youth and educate parents about early literacy. Must possess excellent communication skills, diplomacy and the ability to resolve customer complaints. • Serves as the primary interface for the Library District on early literacy issues and is responsible for working with outside agencies to identify target populations. • Coordinates monitors and evaluates early literacy programs such as story times and parent training; maintains statistical information and produces reports. • Provides leadership in the planning and implementation of Summer Reading for the Library District. • Provides reference assistance through use of Sirsi, by helping customers locate materials, answers questions, places holds, completes forms, confers with other staff and makes referrals to other organizations and agencies; instructs customers in the use of print and on-line materials, equipment, and technologies. • Arranges programs for the public and schools which promote the use of library materials and services. • Provides training to storytellers on how to utilize the Every Child Ready to Read literacy skill development techniques. • Resolves customer issues and communicates library policies and procedures to customers. Uses diplomacy and tact to address customers of all ages about appropriate conduct within the library. • Stays informed of relevant District and work related information by checking email, announcements, newsletters and posters. • Maintains consistent use of Time Clock, Workforce Access, Electronic Work Request system and district shared electronic information files. • Supports team daily efforts to ensure a safe and secure environment for customers and employees by staying alert to your surroundings and following safety procedures. • Occasionally assigned to the role of Person in Charge for the Rawlings Library including oversight of safety, building security and of the security guard on duty. • Other duties as required.

This is a newly created position which we are very excited to fill!Pueblo City County Library District is seeking a Youth Librarian with Early Literacy Emphasis to facilitate youth programming and early literacy development throughout the Library District. This will be done by developing, coordinating, conducting and evaluating programs designed to meet the needs of the community. This position supports the Youth Services department by providing excellent customer service, expertise in information services to customers utilizing all of our print and non-print resources and an ability to provide improvisational training according to each customer’s information needs.

Education and Experience: A Masters Degree in Library Science from a college or university accredited by the American Library Association plus three years of combined work experience in a library or children’s educational setting. Experience with literacy skills development is preferred. Skills and Abilities: Must possess knowledge of children’s and young adult literature as well as knowledge of human growth and development. Demonstrated creativity in youth programming. Knowledge of research techniques, reference resources, databases and Internet resources. Knowledge of library automation systems. Excellent customer relations skills and the ability to deal with difficult or unique library customers. Ability to conduct reference interviews and provide positive readers’ advisory experiences. Intermediate computer skills using Microsoft Office, email, internet, electronic databases and library catalogue software. Other Requirements: Applicants must pass a criminal background investigation. Must have good driving record, current Colorado Driver’s License and automobile insurance.
