Job Description

Performs advanced professional library work and administrative duties. Responsible for managing, supervising and providing delivery of patron services for a branch library. Exercises considerable independent judgment. May perform duties that involve responsibilities affecting the entire Library District. • Creates positive experiences for library patrons by effectively and efficiently performing job tasks. • Must have the ability to present a positive image of the library in attitude, communications and appearance while performing duties in both the public and staff areas. • Responsible for all administrative decisions effecting a branch library, staffing, and facilities management. Participates in Library District planning and administrative decisions. • Makes branch budget decisions while keeping the entire District's best interests in mind. Recommendations are also made to the Associate Director of Community Services. • Responsible for administering local collection development. • Responsible for hiring, training, counseling, disciplining, motivating, and evaluating branch staff. With approval of the Associate Director of Community Services and the Associate Director of Human Resources, may initiate disciplinary procedures. • Develops, implements and manages public programs and community relations. • Maintains a thorough familiarity with library technology for circulation and public access and use of the circulation/catalog system. Stays abreast of developments in library management and technology through professional literature, training, and continuing education. • Demonstrates a professional, positive, cooperative, team-oriented working relationship with staff, co-workers, and volunteers. • Promotes DCL’s culture of safety by following library safety policy guidelines and safety rules. Practices effective personal and branch safety. • Performs other work duties as assigned.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is generally performed in an office and library environment, at computer workstations, on multiple tasks, software programs, and projects. Work requires constant sitting and computer work, moderate physical activity, close visual work; with limited proximity to automated handling equipment, limited exposure to moderate noise levels, residual dirt, dust, and occasional exposure to chemicals, mold or foreign substances. Work involves extensive interaction with customers and staff, moderate exposure to behavior issues, and may require regular travel. May require varied work hours, including weekends and evenings, which may change periodically• Extensive knowledge of branch services including policies and procedures. Proactively maintains knowledge and skills in the areas of current library practices, trends and philosophies. A leader in providing committed community involvement. Maintains superior technical library skills. Exhibits excellent leadership, team building, change management and management/supervisory skills. Maintains the highest possible standards of positive, professional, competent, knowledgeable and responsive public service. Must be an active participant in district-wide decision making, planning and goal-setting processes. • Work is characterized by independent planning, originality and imagination to devise and develop methods for branch problem solving. Applies fundamental principles and procedures of library management and patron service delivery. Errors may affect broad aspects of community relations, funding, service delivery, and staff relations. Will have access to restricted information relating to organizational policy and practices. • Works independently under general policy guidance and direction of the Associate Director of Community Services. Plans and organizes details of own work. Responsible for the overall management of the branch facility, and contents. Maintains high standards of safety, cleanliness, and public accessibility. Coordinates the work of the branch staff and serves as a liaison to other library branches and to other local library systems. • Maintains a high level of visibility within and understanding of the local community and community leaders. Maintains regular contact with patrons, Associate Director of Community Services, Branch Managers, staff members and community members. Represents the branch on matters of importance, frequently exercising final authority. • Must have the ability to work as an effective team member and work independently to complete tasks as assigned. • Computer Skills: Must demonstrate proficiency in computer use including internet, email, Microsoft Office Products (or equivalent). Keyboard skills required at an equivalent of typing 50 words per minute with minimal errors. Must be able to learn and become proficient with equipment and software programs as required to effectively and efficiently perform assigned duties. • Physical Abilities: Must have the physical ability, stamina, mobility and manual dexterity to: Support all aspects of operating a seven-day-a-week library. Work at computer workstations, repetitively for extended periods. Regularly participate in meetings or events at various locations and hours. Access and transport relevant materials up to 35 pounds, and read a minimum 8 point font, regularly. On an occasional basis, tolerate residual smoke, dust, mold or foreign substances on materials.
