Job Description

Head Librarian The head librarian position runs a library at Fountain Valley School, a private high school of approximately 250 students. The budget in the library is about $60K and is responsible for serving students, faculty and staff at the school. The librarian provides resources to supplement curriculum, assist with technology needs and evaluates the programs and materials offered to support and promote life-long learning. This is a boarding/day school and requires that the librarian integrate himself/herself into boarding school life by doing two nights of duty in the library; participating in the Interim program, being on a weekend team, and taking on a group of advisees after one year. Participation in some committees as required. Job Duties Work cooperatively with teachers in preparing units of study; teach and reinforce information literacy and other research techniques; collaborate with others and work individually to produce a variety of informational and instructional materials Coordinate and schedule all library instruction activities Send information about new materials available in subject areas to department chairs and faculty Provide reader’s advisory service and reference service/assistance to the community. Includes providing patron instruction in the use of library reference services and research tools, including electronic resources Inform students and teachers of ethical issues relating to print, software, web sites (copyright, citing sources, etc.) Supervise students in the library, including class visits for research projects and individual use for information and recreation needs Select, order, receive, catalog, and process all new resources; send gift letters to donors Maintain the collection on a day-to-day basis, including general circulation, shelving, mending, weeding, and preparing patrons’ overdue notices and billing Perform an inventory of the library’s collection Oversee the library budget. Submit invoices to the Business Office for payment. Submit budget requests to the business manager Update the list of new materials added to the collection on the FVS website and update all library information on the FVS website Demonstrates abilities in organizational, human relations, oral and written communications skills. Direct and supervise library assistants, evening study hall assistants, and student library assistants/volunteers, including submitting timesheets for payroll. May supervise adult volunteers. Supervise evening study hall in the library on a rotating basis with other library staff Oversee the physical facility and report problems to the director of grounds and maintenance. Maintains the Follett automation/management system Develop and oversee implementation of long-and short-range plans for the library Participate in national, state, and regional library professional organizations Participate in professional development and continue professional reading to remain aware of new material available and trends and innovations in library practices and services Represent and advocate for the library within the community Perform related duties and responsibilities as required Requirements A degree in library science is required (with an ALA accredited degree) 3-5 years of library experience required Be able to use MLA format Strong computer skills Excellent communication skills both written and verbal Previous management of employees, preferred To apply send cover letter, resume and references to: Fountain Valley School attn: Mindy Brandenburg, HR 6155 FVS Road, Colorado Springs, CO 80911 or Fax to 719.392.6138 or e-mail: mbrandenburg@fvs.edu

This is a Boarding/ Day High School, grades 9-12. There are 250 students and approximately 32 faculty. Fountain Valley School is located on a beautiful campus in Fountain, CO. There is a diverse population of students from 20 countries and many other states.
