Job Description

LIBRARY DIRECTOR The Murray Library (murraylibrary.org) is seeking a progressive, professional administrator to serve as Library Director. The Library has a $1.6 million operating budget, a $224,000 materials budget (FY 2013), a staff of 11 full time employees including 4.5 MLS librarians as well as 22 part time employees. The 19,500 square foot was built in 1992, renovated in 2008, and holds over 77,000 volumes with an annual circulation of 568,363. The Murray Library is an independent, single facility city service with free reciprocal borrowing agreements with neighboring Salt Lake City and Salt Lake County library systems. The Library celebrated its centennial in 2012 with events, programs, and commemorative art installations funded by the Friends of the Murray Library, a 501 (c) (3) charitable organization. Murray City, Utah, with a population of 46,746 residents is located in the heart of metropolitan Salt Lake City. The city has a unique brand identity with its own power department, library, police and fire services and school district. Murray City is also home to Intermountain Medical Center and Fashion Place Mall with Apple Store, Crate and Barrel, and Nordstrom as major tenants. The city is served by three light rail stations. STARTING SALARY RANGE: $80,704 - $100,880 annually depending on experience. Under broad policy guidance and direction from a seven member Library Board of Trustees, performs professional and administrative duties in planning, developing, implementing, and directing public library services for the Murray Public Library. These duties include budget preparation, strategic planning, service evaluation, personnel management, collection development, community relations, and facility maintenance. The Library Director is an at-will, appointed, position who serves at the pleasure of the Library Board. The successful candidate may be appointed as early as September 1, 2012. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE Completion of a Master's Degree in Library science, and a minimum of five years of experience as a librarian in an increasingly responsible supervisory and/or administrative position; substantial experience in public services and dealing with the public; or an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge and abilities. SELECTION PROCESS The top candidates will be invited to tour Murray Library, meet with the current Library Director and staff, and participate in assessment activities on Friday and Saturday, July 13-14, 2012. These candidates will be asked to give a presentation and take part in oral Board interviews. All interview activities will take place at Murray Library, 166 E 5300 S, Murray.
