Job Description

Santa Clara County Library District invites applications for the position of Supervising Librarian. Supervising Librarians supervise the programs, services, and staff for either Children’s Services or Adult & Teen Services within a community library. The current vacancy is in Children's Services located at the shiny new 53,000 square foot Gilroy Library. The list established may be used for future vacancies as they occur.

Knowledge of: • Principles, practices and techniques of modern public administration, with special reference to organization, personnel management, and budgetary preparation and control; • Principles of management including training, directing, evaluating and supervising subordinates; • Library tools, methods and procedures; • Principles and practices of planning; organizing and implementing adult, teen, and children programs to meet community needs; • A wide variety of reading material; • Library reference materials; • Principles and procedures of reference services; • Classification and cataloging systems and principles; • Principles and techniques of material selection and evaluation to establish balanced library collections; • Library facilities; • Library programs and services; • The selection, evaluation and organization of library materials; Ability to: • Plan, organize and conduct programs for all ages; • Supervise, train and evaluate subordinate staff; • Advise and instruct patrons in the use of library facilities and reference tools; • Demonstrate effective and tactful oral and written communications in serving a wide variety of individuals and diverse communities; • Use library tools effectively; • Analyze community needs and develop programs and policies to meet those needs; • Define problems, collect and process data, and reach valid conclusions to solve problems and develop programs and procedures; • Recommend and/or select library materials for purchase using library selection techniques; • Make budget recommendations for program; monitor and control allocated budget; • Analyze collection and budget to fulfill needs of the community.
