Job Description

Background Information: This is an exciting opportunity to impact children and families in Denver through the leadership of the Early Literacy Department. The successful candidate will support the Denver Public Library’s Community Impact Statement: Children from birth are immersed in literacy-rich environments where they discover the joy of reading and learning, motivating them to achieve and graduate from high school. This position is critical to the enhancement of in-house storytimes and the highly successful Read-Aloud program, as well as sharing of the early literacy message with parents and caregivers. Duties and Responsibilities: Creates lifelong library customers by ensuring a high quality early literacy experience for customers and staff. Develops programs and services for 0-5 year olds and their adults. Identifies and implements emerging opportunities to move the early literacy Community Impact Statement goal forward. Oversees daily operations of the early literacy department including personnel, scheduling, budgeting and customer service. Supports a culture of early literacy throughout the community. Trains, coaches, mentors and motivates staff and volunteers. Communicates effectively with customers, staff, and administration. Coordinates departmental work with other library work units and City agencies. Builds relationships and collaborates with community partners around early literacy issues and concerns. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of library services for infancy through adolescence. Knowledge of current research in early literacy and child/brain development. Knowledge of early literacy best practices in library and community settings. Knowledge of the Public Library Association’s ECRR initiatives and the materials/resources that support it. Skill in providing strong, passionate and compassionate leadership. Skill in the recruitment, selection, training and motivation of a talented staff and a diverse group of dedicated volunteers. Ability to model a positive attitude, excellent interpersonal skills, cultural sensitivity, and a sense of humor. Ability to creatively solve problems, negotiate and handle stressful situations in a positive manner. Ability to create and maintain positive staff relationships. Ability to communicate effectively with both individuals and groups. Ability to multi-task and prioritize. Ability to demonstrate innovation and flexibility. Experience: Two years of professional-level librarian experience. Experience in providing library service to children and families with a focus on early literacy within the library and the community. Experience training, coaching and mentoring adults. Prior supervisory and project management experience highly desirable. Education: A Master’s in Library Science from an ALA accredited program.
