Mid-Continent Public Library, http://www.mymcpl.org/, is a consolidated public library system serving 750,000 people in Clay, Platte and Jackson Counties in Missouri—surrounding the central core of and serving major portions of Kansas City, Missouri. Library programs and services are supported through a $41.9 annual operating budget with 22.5% dedicated to materials purchases and a substantial portion of that being for children’s and teen materials. Almost half a million residents carry MCPL cards and 39,785 customers participated in the 2012 Summer Reading Program—noted as being one of the nation’s most successful summer reading programs. Mid-Continent Public Library serves three of the fifteen-county metropolitan area anchored by Kansas City that spans the border between Missouri and Kansas.
