Job Description

20% DEPARTMENT MANAGEMENT - Manages the department by prioritizing goals and making operational decisions on how to best achieve them, arranging tasks, staff, budget and other resources in order to accomplish the work of the department, implement decisions of the Director, and ensure a planned approach to library district communications and marketing. 20% PROJECTS & INITIATIVES - Assists the Director of Development & Communications in implementing strategic plan tactics and initiatives that involve communications in order to ensure that the communications component is included in reaching the goals of the Library District strategic plan. 20% STAFF SUPERVISION - Supervises the Writer/Editor, Communications Assistant, and Publicity Coordinator by setting performance objectives, organizing resources and making implementation decisions, coaching and providing feedback, managing conflict and appraising performance in order to optimize the performance of department staff. 20% WRITING - Writes communications for internal and external audiences by composing copy for grant applications, employee communications, talking points, etc., in order to support the needs of the department and ensure a planned approach to communications in the Library District. 20% EDITING - Edits the content, appearance and usability of external and internal communications including the annual report, promotional materials, publicity campaigns, staff intranet, and employee communications in order to ensure that the desired message and image is presented.

Experience: Five years to ten years of similar or related experience. Education: Equivalent to a college degree. Customer relations, including trust, tact, empathy, conscientiousness, conformity, focus, courtesy, flexibility, vocabulary, and math. Microsoft Office skills, including Windows, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Internet Explorer, Outlook. Management aptitude, including management education and experience; leadership skills; responsibility for outcomes; personal productivity; practical thinking; adaptability; coaching; and, business ethics. Ability to travel between facilities. Knowledge of public administration; applicable laws, rules, & procedures regarding dissemination of public records & of principles of communication in the public sector. Skill in written & oral communication including public speaking, media relations and researching market data and gathering public input. Knowledge of journalism including writing, editing, grammar, spelling, and punctuation. Knowledge of printing and graphics industry; desktop publishing and graphics programs; web sites as a communication tool and marketing principles. Accredited in Public Relations (APR) designation or other certification of competence in the field of communications and marketing

The Arapahoe Library District, a public library system serving more than 200,000 residents living in Arapahoe County. Arapahoe County and other major suburban counties make up the greater metropolitan area surrounding Denver, Colorado. The Arapahoe Library District operates eight branch libraries, an Outreach Service that provides mobile library services, and a library at the County Detention Center, funded by the Arapahoe County Sheriff's Department. A seven-member Board of Trustees sets the library budget and determines policy.
